Abandon, les Enfers

Meg Cabot

3.6 AVERAGE

Pierce is trapped in the underworld, but not because she’s dead, because John has brought her there. Unable to find a door back to the real world, to her life (though, it’s improbable that she’s actually SAFE in that life), Pierce is to remain in the underworld until John deems the world safe enough for her to walk upon its ground again (though he probably never will…). However, when Pierce receives word (well, more of a video…) that her cousin’s in trouble, she’s ready to jump up to the real world to come to his rescue… but one thing stands in her way: John. As Pierce begins to unlock the secrets to John’s history, and how he even became a death deity, she finds out that nothing is as it seems, and that sometimes lies meant to protect, end up doing the opposite. Thrilling and utterly captivating, this book had me reading until four in the morning totally immersed in Pierce’s world(/tired.).

Meg Cabot has done it again. Way more interesting that the first novel, this book really reflected Persephone’s myth well, as Pierce battles with time and the Fates to save her cousin, find out the truth behind John Hayden, and find out if she’s really bound to the underworld, Pierce’s story will have you totally hooked. Cabot has added twists and turns that add to the story, creating more drama, more action, and unlocking more secrets. There was definitely more stuff happening in this book, showing more than telling, and no flashbacks (thank goodness). Extremely better than the first novel, I loved this book!

In the second book of this Hades/Persephone inspired trilogy we learn more about John's origins. The 1st book seemed to focus on telling Pierce's story that John seemed almost an afterthought. This second book we are introduced to more characters. Hoping Cabot achieves a little more balance in the final book.

I can't explain it but I thought it was pretty good

Part of me really wants to like this book. It has a great premise and a good idea for a main character. But, I don't. No matter how hard I try to ignore the following things.
• Its ok for a main character to ask questions and not understand what is going on, but I felt like Pierce was asking stupid questions constantly, things that anyone would know. Then she would solve another problem that there were subtle hints for. What I'm trying to say is that they made her super dull and then super bright. It wasn't consistent.
• I feel like John is showing the signs of a abusive boyfriend. I'm going to include a link to a great article that talks about how Edward Cullen shows the signs of an abusive boyfriend including: Looks at you or acts in ways that scare you, Acts jealous or possessive,Tries to control how you spend your time, who you see or talk to, where you go or what you wear, Destroys your property. All from the Mayo Clinic. Now in reality he is not as bad as Edward but it doesn't change the fact that he fits the signs.
• Kinda predictable which is always disheartening.
• Leaving her poor mother. I understand leaving her fury grandmother but her mother was always there to protect her and now they gave that role to John.
• Alex is sooo annoying. Hopefully they expand on his character going forward and make him less whiny.

One other major problem is that when I worried that people thought I was reading erotica because of the cover. It looks like a sheet.

Overall I still love Meg because her action scenes are so absorbing and she can have you lost in the story.

Like the premise, but this was a very slow moving sequel. It's one thing for Pierce to be in the Underworld with her boyfriend, it's another to be trapped there! I love Meg's books, but they've gotten very formulaic. I'm a sucker for angst though, and this book was loaded with it.

**WARNING: I try to be spoiler free, but there was one scene I just had to talk about, so I apologize ahead of time!**

Wow. Just Wow. I am really loving this series, even with the creepiness that goes along with it. Imagine being 17 years old and trapped in a world you never even knew existed prior to, well, dying and coming back to life. And then, you get sucked back there when you aren't dead any more.

My heart broke for Pierce when she started learning the truth about what has happened to her and who the people around her really are. I don't know how I would have handled things if I had ever been in the same situation.

I love the way this is written, and the modernized interpretation of the mythology is absolutely enthralling. I am, however, always amused about how sex is handled in young adult novels. The culmination coming in what is almost described as starbursts and sunshine and all that fluffy stuff just really makes me flip into a fit of giggles. It did not detract from the story at all. I think it is a testament to the nature of reality anymore, though, at the same time.

I really enjoyed this novel and cannot wait to dive into Awaken, the third book in this series, and find out how it all works out for Pierce and John and Alex and Kayla, because things just got very, very real for all of them.

it was so bad that i didn't even bother to finish it.It was unrealistic.i know its fantasy and all but still..
The story is a modern adaption of greek god of death hades and persephone. Here its Pierce and John.
Pierce is stupid and dumb. And John, the lord of dead, was even more pathetic. He lies to her and tricks her into staying in underworld forever with him but she doesn't seem even remotely angry about it.the whole story never sticked.i think the readers should atleast like the main characters to read the book. But as the book progressed,it only made me hate them both.
The only reason i started this book was because the prequel was good.I guess its due to the fact that prequel was more about Pierce and her family and her past and less about the relationship between Pierce and John.
i don't understand how there's an average rating of 3.90 for this stupid book.
