This story has a Bodyguard Trope, lost princess, and pansexual slow burn romance.
I listened to the audiobook which I believe lead to a more enjoyable read. As the book does have slow pace at times without much happening. Felt like it was missing something. It is a fun, easy read.

I just did not like either main character, at all. I feel bad saying it, but in the first chapter when the main character got dumped I was definitely on the ex's side - I think watching this person be a doormat for everyone would be awful! In the second chapter from her POV she had a lot more rage but it was too little, too late, as far as I was concerned. On the other POV's side, I could not understand why she wasn't fired immediately, and I didn't enjoy her descriptions of people, her life choices, any of it. So I just bounced off completely.

this was cute, funny, and heart-warming with some good heat. I liked the development of the mc's relationship, and I'm always a sucker for one-bed, forced-proximity stuff. the ending felt pretty abrupt, and I would have liked another 10 to 15 pages to stretch it out a little more. but otherwise, a really good read
Cole has been doing really fun things with the trope of “contemporary royalty romance” in both this and her Reluctant Royals series by creating an entire network of invented kingdoms throughout Africa and the Mediterranean through which her Black protagonists can romp without having to dodge around the legacy of European royal history. Both series now have an f/f entry. In this novella, two complex and difficult personalities clash (and encounter an awkward attraction) around the possibility that one of them is the heir to the mysteriously-disappeared ruler of an island kingdom. If you’re here for all the tropes—bodyguard romance, forced proximity, fake relationship, missing heir, neurodivergent protagonist—then you need this book. The only thing that didn’t really work for me was the surprise twist at the end, but I can’t tell you why because: spoilers. And it might work better for you.
