Seven-year-old Penny has had a tragic life so far. Her mom died of a drug overdose and her father has a severe gambling addiction. At least he is home…most of the time. Sometimes he does disappear for several days, but usually there is food to eat and they do have a home in the trailer park. Sometimes she goes with him to his poker games. She has a skill with numbers that can help him win money. But some games she can’t go to, and that’s when he loses. That’s where he went a couple weeks ago. There’s no more food in the trailer and Penny is hungry.

When she met the boy in the woods, she couldn’t help but take his money. She needed it for something to eat. But she felt so guilty. He was nice to her.

This is a prologue to a series by Warren, showing how the main characters for the next book met as children.

This is the short novella of Damon and Penny. Their first encounter and how smart is the author building up the climax for the next book.

I think u also falls for Damon. I mean even his name is like an chocolate fantasy in my mouth. Again this is a great introduction to whats the story will become.

Quick read and a good start to the next book. It give background set up for the upcoming book and how they will feel going forward. It was sad and heartbreaking but I can’t wait to read what happens next!

Started this while in line for plasma donating, finished this before I even left the place! I've been making my way through all my freebies and didn't even realize this was just a prologue til I finished and was upset. I wanted more story! Definitely gonna read the actual book soon. I have to see just how bad our Prince of Darkness actually is. I like that Penny is aware of her life as is. She's dating someone but isn't really in love with him, just comfortable. I'd be very annoyed if she pushed Damon to the back of her mind and "fell madly in love with" what's his face. Her dad can also do better as a person. I mean, your kid lost her mom to drugs and once you find out she can count cards for you, you don't take her every time you go! Yes morally it wrong to use your kid to cheat but at least said kid would benefit from those winnings.

I liked this novella. It had mostly a backstory effect before our main heroes were met. Also, it included a small part of the King novel.

Interesting read

An intriguing start to a series. The characters are real and relatable, the story sad but addictive. Now I just have to read the next one!

Nothing but a teaser. A waste of time. The book it is designed to make me buy might be good but I hate these tactics so I won't.

Damon Scott!

Oh wow, I must have more!! Poor Penny! But now she's a little older and I can't wait to see where this story goes. Great prologue, enough to get you wanting more!
