Honestly, it was quite dull. I don’t love DNFing a Jaleigh Johnson book, but after three hours I wasn’t invested in the characters, the plot was vague and unclear, and I wasn’t entranced with the setting. That third point very well could be personal bias, but it still contributed to my putting the book down. I also found it slightly weird that the villain was disabled and his two cronies were (supposedly) queer women… Two harmful literary stereotypes that just aren’t great. Pool all those things together and you have a recipe for a DNF. Since this is one of Johnson’s earlier works, I won’t hold it against her. I’ll still check out The Howling Delve and Spider and Stone.

I read this with the WotC Novel club & really liked it--quick and easy read with a very unusual protagonist for a Fantasy book--also a deeper look into some of the darker parts of the Forgotten Realms. Highly recommended for any FR fans.

Ah, so I was wrong. This is a series but not following the same cast, only following the city of Waterdeep. This one was similar to the last but I am not that interested in Waterdeep to continue the series.
