Joe's father is attacked and left in a critical condition in hospital. It is the start of a journey where Joe is left too question everything about his life and his relationship with his father. Decades of secrets are slowly revealed as Joe works out why his father was attacked and who is the woman that is claiming to be his wife.
This was a bit slow to start but picks up as the truths are revealed. The friendship between Joe and Vincent Ruiz shines through and is what makes this enjoyable read.

This book started off with a great pace. However as the pages went on the story became over saturated with characters and random stories that did not need to be there.
I find myself so disheartened with this story. I'd had a few recommendations of this book but to me it was just such a let down. There a couple of things referred to in the end that had absolutely no mention of throughout the whole story.
The story had such great potential but in the end I feel it just waffled it's way to the disappointing end

I would probably give this 3.5 stars. I really like the writing of Michael Robotham and I read this book without reading any others in this series. A good mystery, without being great, in my opinion. I liked the main character Joe, but probably would have felt more affection for him had I been on his 9 book journey with him. As is, I wondered why he was such a terrible dad, and why he acted like a cop, when he wasn't one. I also didn't really like his dad, although there were quite a few characters I did like, and most of them seemed very real and believable. That aside, trying to learn about his father and the 'second family' was interesting, and I did enjoy most of the narrative action. The ending fell down little for me, but all in all, it wouldn't stop me from going back and reading a bit more about Joe's life.

Well, it was okay, but that’s it. Predictable plot elements, a somewhat unlikeable protagonist with unrealistic situations and in the end, I really didn’t care what would happen. My rating is probably generous. 2.25

The writer inserts a random sexual encounter between two characters and it completely derailed my interest in the plot, which was rather interesting before that. The way the interaction was written could have been pulled straight from the “plot” of an “adult” movie.
