the sheer volume (ha) is daunting but once you get into it it's very cool. lots of different plotlines, but pretty easy to keep straight. good job
killing ned
, glad there was that conflict. bad job
killing jory. idk i really liked jory for some reason
. some of the characters are hard to understand (sansa) and also the age thing? i absolutely despise the "tomorrow is my 10th birthday when i become a MAN. i have been trained in swordfighting since the womb and can best any trained 30 year old in hand to hand combat. i think it's time to get a wife" fantasy trope and this one's eggregious. "i'm a man" no ur a literal child. u should be in grade school or something. i get that this is supposed to be medieval-ish and stuff where people expect to die by 40 and therefore child labor or whatever, but the kid is goddamn 6 years old. some of the dothraki worldbuilding stuff feels pretty orientalist. idk the whole "savages from the east" thing - a little on the nose? i like the fantasy elements of the book and would want to see more. holy hell the map is hard to take in, its so fucking BIG. also
daenarys being like 12 and essentially marrying/fucking a 30ish man? and being pretty much chill with it
? yeahhhhh no. i get that it is part of the worldbuilding, but it's still veeery not fun to read

Didn't think I was going to enjoy it as much as I did. The writing is amazing and I really loved this book. The writing is incredible and it completely immerses you in the world of Westeros/Essos. I can't wait to read the rest of the series. My only problem is that at times I didn't enjoy the structure of so many charcter perspectives. I would be so immersed in the chapter/storyline and then the perspective would change and all that tension that was being built disappeared. I definitely have my favourite charcters and I found that when it was someone I didn't like as much, the chapters were more difficult to finish. However, I did like that the majority of the chapters were the same size (10-20 pgs.), it really helped me progress. There are also some strange time skips within the story, especially towards the end. While the characters often knew what was happening, I was lost for a while trying to figure out what has happened in the days/weeks/months that have passed (the time jumps are never really specified which I didn't like either). Overall, the story was incredible. If the plot hasn't (or has) been spoilt for you, it is worth the read.

George’s writing is pretty clunky in the beginning but you find the grove of it.
It’s slower than you’d expect but extremely readable. Id suggest this to anyone wanting to get into fantasy because it’s such an easy read.

Sweet Sansa is my favorite. Daenerys is the definition of gaslight gatekeep girlboss.

I was disappointed by the TV adaptation, so I decided to read the source material. The size was intimidating (800+ pages!) but somehow it did not feel overly long or drawn out. My favorite characters so far are Catelyn and Sansa.
