The author narrates the audiobook, and his reading is very monotone and bleak. I also just find it hard to get into a book narrated by a child like this. It just kinda rubs me the wrong way. No hate if you enjoy it.

Nothing has touched my heart this way in years. An honor to be able to hear this story, from the author himself on Audiobook, and a glaring wake up call to the privilege so often overlooked. Read it, listen to it, appreciate it. I cannot imagine the pain of revisiting these events that Javier must've experienced, but I'm so grateful to be let in to hear it.

It's a beautifully written book, and emotionally tough to read. It rings true, although I imagine it would be hard to recall every detail of what happened when the author was eight.

ok by the time i got to the very end, i was near catatonic.

i'll also confess that i was completely convinced that Javier was going to be truly alone at some point and so i was wrecked with panic. i see now the book is really about the found family that was created.
