Review is for the audiobook edition: As I said in updates, I am really glad I listened to this via audio cd instead of reading it. Not because I think the book would have been a bad read, certainly not! The style was poetic, but not overly so and I really enjoyed it! However, Steve West as Sean Kendrick and Fiona Hardingham as Puck Connely were exactly what was needed to shoot this from good to amazing!

Great world building

I listened to this by audiobook and at the end, there was an interview with the author. She told listeners that she had tried to write this book multiple times and done tons of research for it, and listening to it, I realized she HAD done her research and that's what made this book so great! I loved the detail and the plot and the anticipation and definitely the characters. This is a very unique story and I would recommend it to anyone! It's a story about overcoming societal norms and gender discrimination and just doing what you love no matter the opposition. Very inspiring and definitely one of my new favorites!

This book is good for if you want a slow, vibe-heavy read with a lot of angsty cliffs and stuff. Which, don’t get me wrong, is fun sometimes. This book took a bit for me to get into, but I trusted Maggie Stiefvater that it would pay off, and wouldn’t you know it, it did.

"What it's like is a battle. A mess of horses and men and blood. The fastest and strongest of what is left from two weeks of preparation on the sand. It's the surf in your face, the deadly magic of November on your skin, the Scorpio drums in the place of your heartbeat. It's speed, if you're lucky. It's life and it's death or it's both, and there's nothing like it.”

Why I waited so long to read this book, is beyond me, and I berate myself for it. It is breath taking, heart warming, and beautiful. A new favourite!

Stiefvater is a genius with words. She pulls at your heart threads, binding you to her characters with every word, every verbal and non-verbal exchange, every fear and longing made bare. This connection goes beyond the main characters, to the island of Thisby itself, which is dark and terrifying, yet beautiful. Stiefvater allows her readers to experience the love, dreams and fears the islanders have for their home, and their powerful and deadly water horses, the capaill uisce - who are the true focus of this gripping and spellbinding tale. As I read, Thisby began to feel like home. It was so vividly written. I could smell the rain and ocean, feel the sand between my toes, and taste the blood and salt. And the romance was wonderfully slow, each moment between the characters a treasure. This novel made me crave slow burns, to reignite the feeling that comes with latching onto every exchange, every look, every thought, every little loving gesture.
