Norm liked to say he was a hunk of coal, hoping to be a diamond someday. Like damn near everything he said it was in the end a joke. Diamonds do not come from coal, as he points out in this book. That's just a misconception.
But coal is the thing that keeps us warm in the snow and the dark. Coal can even save us, help to purge us of our poisons and restore us to health. All diamonds have ever done is sit there.
