Equal Rites is a change-of-pace compared to the first two Discworld novels. While still filled to the brim with humor, the Discworld is no longer just a satire of fantasy and fairy tale tropes. Rather Pratchett is writing about real themes here, as well as expanding the world-building of the Disc itself. This book doesn't have the deepest exploration of gender roles and feminism, but that Pratchett is exploring such themes bodes well for the following books in the series. Add to that some of the most lovable characters on the Disc so far (Granny) and this book stands head-and-shoulders above the previous two books.

  •  “Granny sighed. "You have learned something," she said, and thought it safe to insert a touch of sternness into her voice. "They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it is not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.” 
  •  “She was already learning that if you ignore the rules people will, half the time, quietly rewrite them so that they don't apply to you.”

Definitely prefer the watch novels, but he has a very fun writing style. Book holds up shockingly well.
