This was a unique story, although predictable (for an adult) in some parts, it was an enjoyable and heart warming story with a lovely friendship and character growth from both of our protagonists. I also really liked the illustrations for this story, it really helped bring the story to life.

Such a fun middle-grade novel that I truly loved thanks to Educator ALC's from Libro.fm.

This story is about Ebenezer Tweezer who is 511 years old and uses a potion to stay young and alive. However, he has to feed a beast living in his mansion house in order to receive gifts and this potion. The food that the Beast wants just gets more and more elaborate and now he has asked for a child to eat.

I devoured this audiobook in one sitting while folding laundry and wrapping Christmas gifts and it was so fun, exciting, and comical. All of the characters are so fun and exciting and all of the events throughout are fun and this is such a whimsical and heartwarming book that is so fun for anyone to enjoy!

When you open this book, you enter a world full of macabre humor, a grisly, magical beast, and a spunky young girl who will win your heart.

What I Loved

I loved the story within the story of a young girl and an unusually older man who filled a need each had for friendship and love. Both characters changed as a result, and the effects are nothing short of magical. This story is very heartwarming at its core, and the characters are endearingly flawed to a point where any other ending to this story would not work.

I loved the illustrations found throughout the tale. They fit the tone of the story perfectly, reflecting the humor and wit of the words surrounding them. I don't often get the opportunity to enjoy illustrations, much less talk about them, so that makes these all the more special.

I love the characters, especially Bethany, whose snarky wit accomplishes something that Ebenezer has been unable to do in over 500 years. As a parent, I just wanted to hug her and give her the love that a cruel twist of fate stole from her at a tender young age. Kids will laugh at her antics and delight in her bad choices as well as her smart ones.

The Beast is a magical blob of goo that will horrify and disgust readers and happily route for its demise. I can hear the screams of "Eew!" from kids paying rapt attention as the story unfolds. Don't let the gooey essence distract you from seeing the wily cunningness at the heart of this Beast lest you be his next victim.

To Read or Not to Read

I can easily see this book being a new favorite for kids and adults, though make sure the child is old enough not to be terrified of the Beast.
funny lighthearted

3.5 stars
My 10 year old granddaughter and I read this over FaceTime. She wanted to give it 5 stars. I held back for two reasons. I wasn’t crazy over the ending and there were a few parts I skipped, like the fact that Bethanys parents died in a fire. This was a little too much for my granddaughter so I simply just said they died. It was also a little much in some other respects but a fun read together.

Thanks to #netgalley for the chance to read this.
This is one of the best children's books I've read in a while. Dorian Gray meets Roald Dahl meets Lemmony Snickett.
The characters are wonderfully dark and flawed. 511 year old Ebenezer Tweezer has a beast that lives in his attic and "rewards" him for bringing the beast exciting meals.
Hence the entrance of "The Bethany"...the naughtiest child in the orphanage, hell bent on causing mischief wherever she goes.
It's both funny and heart-warming and deliciously dark.

I loved this book from the minute I started reading it to the minute I finished it, think I had it read in two days? this book is laugh out loud, and funny. When I started reading this i was like why would anyone want a beast? But soon I learned as to why Ebenezer had the beast, and the how he found out that if he feed it it would give him what ever he asked for. Ebenezer is 511 years old, and i bet your wondering how he can live to that age? well it all has something to do with the beast that he has in the top floor bedroom, one day the beast asks Ebenezer to find him a child to eat, He goes to the local orphanage and finds Bethany who he brings home and has to fatten up for the beast to eat, but soon he feels really bad for trying to fatten her up and lets her in on the plan, and she is upset but together they come up with a plan to get rid of the beast once and for all.
