This book is written so much better than "White Tiger," the first one in the series, it almost seems as if they were written by different people. I was disappointed that the story was not resolved in the trilogy. I am not sure the entertainment value of this series is worth the time invested in reading it.

I end with mixed feelings about this series. Kylie Chan as an author presents like an undeveloped writer in a high school frame of mind. The characters were shallow and undeveloped throughout which resulted in pretty spazzy dialogue. People make jokes that aren't funny that everyone breaks down in laughter about. Everyone calls Emma "remarkable" throughout the book without any sort of remarkableness. She goes through periods of being overly impressed with herself and overly "humble," and both get old by the end of the series. I didn't really care for any of the characters by the end, except Simone, who also had all the best lines. The conclusion was very deus-ex-machina, with no good explanation for how or why the saving of the day actually happened. And on top of all that, we still don't know what the heck is going on with Emma.

The good: I sort of liked the finale of the book, and couldn't stop reading it toward the end. I think she did a fairly good job wrapping up the plot and I'd probably pick up her next series in the hopes of seeing a more mature author with a more developed writing style and handle on her characters.

3.5 Good storyline, shame it still reads like a young adult book trying to be a serious novel

I struggled to get through this book sometimes. I thought it was good but it was never able to really absorb me into the story. I never formed a real attachment to any of the characters, although Simone is charming and all the students of the Academy are lovely. I think my favourite of the trilogy is 'Red Phoenix'. I won't be reading the next trilogy any time soon but may return to this story and read them in the future. This book is definitely a decent read but something I wouldn't re-read.

THIS IS *NOT* A TRILOGY! The story does not wrap up after the this book! I'm so disgusted. I continued to read because I enjoyed the overall idea of the book, but I've come to despise Emma so much and how the writer uses descriptors that don't fit, create excess drama that adds nothing to the story, and, did I mention how much I don't like Emma? I figured I'd deal with it because it's a trilogy so it'll all work out and be worth it... only it's not and it doesn't so it's not. I wish I would have known. I never would have read this far. Just make it a series, tell everyone it's a series and call it done.
