A great follow-up to “Warcross” that has the same amount of action and drama that both readers 📖 and video game 🎮 lovers will enjoy (Grade: A-).

This was cute...I definitely loved the setting of this story, the friendships, and the romance. However, the plot line was just not enough to hook me in and make me excited. It was okay, but not great.

I thought I loved [b:Warcross|29385546|Warcross (Warcross, #1)|Marie Lu|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1489081682s/29385546.jpg|49634052] but Wildcard takes the cake! I devoured the hell out of this book ya’ll! This picked up right where Warcross left off at and it threw you right into the action.

I loved being reunited with all the characters again. The relationship between Emika and The Phoenix Riders was really warming my heart. It was great to see Emika go from being a loner and actually letting people in and relying on her friends.

I know that a lot of people didn’t like the relationship between Emika and Hideo, but I was that other 1% who was actually cheering them on. I’m going to be honest, Hideo messed up. He should have been honest with her and honest with himself. However, everything wasn’t black and white when it came to him. I did like the way he cared for her and her for him.

The action and suspense here kept me reading way past my bedtime. There were so many plot twists that were happening that I was reeling almost the entire time I was reading. The world building was just as great as in Warcross. I’m still kind of upset that we don’t have this kind of technology here. I loved Marie Lu’s descriptions and everything felt so vivid.

Now I will say that I did expect more from the ending. It didn’t wrap up as nicely as I wanted it to, but I still got a bit of the ending that I wanted. I hate that this duology is over, but I can’t wait to see what else she writes!

I LOVE that this was a duology; the sequel wrapped up the storyline nicely.

Urgh I just ship Emika and Hideo. I need more of them

This book was very different to Warcross and, unfortunately, not in a good way. I found that there was a lack of much character development and an abandonment of previously fun, better developed characters with a higher focus on plot.

This book takes the series from a fun, competition-based story into a world of action, conspiracies and secret corporations and I kind of didn’t like that. Perhaps it was just a little too off-course for my liking, but this book felt quite far removed from the previous story and almost a little disjointed. At one point, this actually reminded me of the film Inception too.

Overall, I did enjoy this book and found it a good read, but it just didn’t stand up to the first in the series in terms of fun and character development.

I've had this book downloaded for a while now and didn't get around to reading it until now - probably because I forgot how much I enjoyed the first installment and the world of Warcross. As soon as I started reading, though, I remembered how much I like it, and immediately began rooting for Emika and Hideo again. Fast-paced and exciting, this is a great follow-up to Warcross.

Another audiobook done with my sister, because she got emotionally invested in the characters and honestly who can blame her? Once you've gotten sucked into a world you love it dearly and you want to know how the story ends.

Neither of us saw much of what was going to happen, coming. We loved a good majority of the surprises and how things turned out. The chapters were shorter than usual, and felt a little rushed- like this should have been a trilogy but they only let Lu have 2 books so she had to cut things and squeeze in things the best that she could- which would be the logical explanation. It was still good and a beautiful series that I want to buy one day for my personal collection (Borrowed from the library).

I think the most interesting part for me, as it was for most people, is that Taylor was the real antagonist the whole time. The strings pulling everything along even all those years ago and nobody even knew and yet it all tied back together with her and her Project Zero. It blows my mind how much thought Lu must have put into it and how much more we could have gotten if they had given her a 3rd book.

We needed more personal development, from Emika and her teammates and I think that's what this book should have been about, and if we got a book 3, this should have been book 3 and maybe we would have gotten more than some small nuggets. I loved what we got, felt for the characters, always, but more screentime for them to just be them and build them is important to a story and for this sort of novel I would have liked to see it more. Maybe if we get side novels or a comic series we can get cute slice of life things from the characters.

3.5/5

Ahh this was a fun book to read! I'm glad the story ends here. Sasuke is up and about and Hideo and Emika stayed together. YAY.
