This series stands out in my mind as the worst I’ve ever read. I bought the whole series at the same time and read them all because - DAMNIT I PAID FOR THEM - but the whole time I vacillated between rolling my eyes at the stupidity of the book and being outraged at the pedophilic/torture porn aspects of the book.

I'm so torn about this book. I almost gave up on it multiple times. The world building was awful, and I had no idea who was who or what was even going on. And there was way too much melodrama. Everyone was always snarling, or grabbing onto tables to steady themselves, or the room blurred or spun, or they were trembling, or finding it hard to swallow, etc. It was just all too much, and made for a really annoying reading experience.

Everything Jaenelle did surprised and scared them, and they couldn't believe she could do it, even though they knew she was powerful and was Witch. I'm still a little unclear on what it means to be Witch, even after finishing the book, but I'm guessing it's like the most powerful person of the Blood. So why were they always so scared of what she could do, to the point where they thought they might have to strangle her? Again, I could sum up the entire reading experience with saying it's too much.

But then, there was something about it that kept me reading. Something that has me wanting to read the second book. Maybe I got used to the over the top writing, and the actual plot is good enough to keep me going. Since this was Anne Bishop's first novel, and I love her Others series, I have to believe that her writing gets progressively better.

I will straight up say that this trilogy has a lot of problems. I could go into detail and explain what the problems are, but I'm pretty sure dozens of other people have done that. In spite of that, I love these books. I don't know why, other than maybe I really enjoy reading about the characters Daemon, Saetan, Lucivar, and Surreal. They're interesting, and I would love to hear about some of their past adventures before their lives revolve around Jaenelle. Jaenelle is pretty interesting herself in this book, though, but other than that she's kind of an empty shell that everyone puts their view into. One could argue that's somewhat the point of the character Witch (dreams made flesh), but I don't even care. I read these books in high school, they got me through a serious illness, and I just read them when I want some escapism.

Though these are QUITE dark (violence and rape is in everyone's back story and I'm not exaggerating), it's a weird kind of escape. At the end, it's just an interesting world with interesting rules and I would NOT want to live there!

Powerful and masterfully created high fantsy with charismatic main characters, horrific villains, often heartbreaking and downright chilling scenes. I don't even start reading a sequel right away despite the cliffhanger, because I need an emotional recovery.
Anne Bishop is an extremely talented and extraordinary writer - that's doubtless.

I really loved the world, the shock (OH) that Anne BISHOP wrote this- little miss won't give us a sex scene for Meg but writes this steamy number...

Daemon is hot, I kind of wish that we were headed for both Lucivar and Daemon as her forever loves but from reviews it didn't sound like it.
And I loved Jaenelle, she is a strong character but it was hard to picture a 12 yr old when her "voice" read younger than that.

Anyway, I got horrible feels from the creepy uncles and I ended up cheating and reading the reviews for future books, and I have to admit I am super cheap.
The books sound like it would be worth following and if these were on kindle free then I would keep going in a heartbeat. As I am too cheap, I will not be. Its 9? 10? more books and $$$.

I bought all the Meg series and the continuation into the "Others"- love it and don't regret it, its just that these ones didn't push me enough for purchases.
