To be completely honest, I don't know anything about Hayley Kiyoko or her songs, and I picked this book up because it took place in my home state.

Despite this, I enjoyed it for being a fairly fast-paced, and at times light-hearted sapphic romance.

However, I have mixed feelings overall. I'm 26, so maybe I just can't relate to the young adult aspect of this book, but I felt like a lot of relationships in this book were very toxic. I'm not convinced Sonya deserved a second chance and I was ultimately disappointed that Coley gave it to her despite initially saying no, she needs to work on herself first.

I'm also totally over the "pretty girl" sapphic books. I need to find more sapphic reads that don't focus so much on femme discovering they like girls trope

As someone eight years younger than the characters, I appreciated the look into another small town and its family dynamics. While my state had just legalized same sex marriage at their age, their state had recently doubled down and banned same sex marriage in a state constitutional amendment. I like Sonya’s POV being shown through different Live Journal privacy settings as it added another layer of identity. I just wish the ending had been more fleshed out.

I am usually here for the YA coming of age stories but I struggled a bit with this one. I never really felt invested in the characters and the main relationship was so toxic that I didn’t have any hopes for it to work out.

So this one just didn’t hit the mark for me.

I don’t know the song that it’s based off so maybe that was part of the missing piece for me.

This book was enjoyable but wasn't amazing. I really disliked the ending but I thought coley was a fun protagonist. I enjoyed Haley Kioko doing the audiobook too
