This book is intended to completely wreck you. And it did. In the last freaking page I am in tears. This is everything it needed to be. If you loved the hunger games… read this. It’s the most perfect prequel.
I enjoyed the plot but I definitely noticed a lack of new characters as I was reading.

Was it fun to get a more in-depth background on Haymitch? Yes. Was a re-telling of the politics of the Capitol and how the games work necessary? No. If you’ve read the original Hunger Games, you have basically read this book. I saw a reviewer say that it’s just a book written for fans who are nostalgic and cameos of already known characters are thrown in because fans would be excited about it.
It was fun to be in the world again but also felt like I already knew what was going to happen.

Second time reading this book. The first time I was surprised with how much I ended up liking it. I wouldn’t say that I was uninterested in learning more about Haymitch’s story, but I was iffy about the character getting a whole book. But now that I’ve read it, I feel like it is so essential to the plot of the original trilogy. I found this book to be more intense and graphic than the other Hunger Games books, but I think that is exactly what was needed to get the point across that when the government is treating people like animals, dehumanizing them, brutalizing them, we have a responsibility to fight back and protect each other. I found it to be quite inspiring. One of my main complaints is that this book moves pretty slowly. I would have liked it to be more fast-paced, but it does pick up towards the middle. Overall, I’m so happy that Miss Suzanne let us read this and I hope she releases 20 more books.
