Gorgeous. Brilliant. This collection of short stories peels back layers and layers of the experiences of South Indian women, Muslim or otherwise, and by the end it ripped apart my heart and the very fabric of the sky. The translation sacrificed nothing. Not the playfulness, the nuances of personal relationships as shaped by the home, language, and the larger social environment, or the author’s vision for the sake of the international reader’s comfort (or even understanding).

I always find that I struggle with reviewing translation works, because i always worry things were lost in translation and I am not a credible reader to be imparting thoughts onto this work (that i initially would not be able to read).
short stories are also something i challenge myself with, because i rarely ever feel connected to them for whatever reason it may be.
these were stories that scattered across so many different experiences, my attention really struggled with slowing down and reading each story. might need to revisit at some point.
