I've been debating continuing the Alex Cross series this year. It has come so highly recommended and it is SO popular, I figured it was a really good series.
But, I've been let down by poor dialogue, frustratingly boring tropes, and too much cheese.
Roses are Red seems to break some of those down. The dialogue is still kind of cheesy. The tropes are still there. But, the story itself is more interesting and so those can be more easily dismissed.
That said.... great story. But Cross's life? And his track record with women throwing themselves at him? And what happens later? I'm so over it.

Another nice romp from Patterson. I keep seeing refections of comic books in these stories.
So good. But what the heck. I can’t even write a review right now. That final bit. Oh my goodness. Of to find out what the heck!?
If you like James Patterson's writing style, the book is fantastic. Typical thriller. Mostly predictable, but a few surprises thrown in.
Years ago, when James Patterson was an author and not a brand, he wrote some terrific stories. This is one of them and I’ve read it at least twice. It’s a textbook example of how a thriller is written, used as a template by at least one writer who teaches the subject. The plot moves forward at a rapid pace, the characters — especially Dr Alex Cross — are superb, and the plot twists come thick and fast. I read this in less than one day and it’s tempted me to re-visit at least a few of the dozens of books in this series.
Now this is one of the James Patterson books that really kept me interested. This had a really good plotline and I liked the new characters and the twist at the end. I was sad about the ending death though. I really liked her!
