I simply cannot read this. It’s so boring and I cant force myself to endure it. Maybe when I’m reading it for the history of it all and not the pleasure of it all.

Not the best vampire story, but without it the others wouldn't exist.

I feel like the story of how The Vampyre came about is much more interesting than the book itself, although the letters before and after the story had me laughing like god, just admit you're gay for Byron already ;) But yeah not a super compelling story all things considered. I would still recommend reading it if you're curious because it literally takes like 30 minutes tops, but Frankenstein was by far the better book to come out of this group. Also if you took a drink every time he talks about how ~frail and suggestible~ women are you could probably get a pretty good buzz going.

Knowing this was written for the same competition that gave us the masterpiece Frankenstein makes this more than a little underwhelming. I know this was basically the first vampire story, or at least the one that defined the genre in terms of aligning the monstrous with the romantic. I should be able to appreciate it for that, but sometimes a short story conveys too little. This felt too big of a story for its less than 100 pages.
