The majority of this was strong. The sex was cringe. The slave ancestor simply didn't matter as much as the author wanted it to. Ruby and her husband are somehow both manic pixie dramatically l dream girls. But the writing was strong overall and I was interested. Then I realized there was less than 20% to go and we were still introducing new things, not moving existing threads forward and wrapping up. And then the last 10% or so just... fell apart. What the actual fuck, was this a timed exam? Did something happen to the author and her editor had to finish it for her? Did the author herself suddenly suffer a TBI? Seriously, what the hell is this mess and what happened to the book I was reading for 3 days?
