Marcus and Kai. Age-gap. Cuties but not my fave in the series.

another wonderful read from Riley Hart. I truly love how much of a focus on communication and figuring life out is going on in this series. add in two stubborn people and it was magic

4.5*

ok, i’m not the lengthy type of reviewer but this may be my shortest review i’ve done.

this was a 4 star read for me! it was cute, sweet, funny, and had all the makings for a perfect romance novel. marcus & kai were adorable together! i loved that marcus took the time to get invested in kai’s hobby, and how his family so quickly welcome marcus. the whole time i was rooting for kai to stay, despite really wanting him to succeed too lol.

not a lot to say. it was good but it was a tough follow up from the romantic. parker & elliott just have my heart i can’t help it.

Low angst, light fluff. I love how Marcus takes care of everyone else, but Kai takes care of Marcus.

Marcus and Kai. I don’t even know where to start with these two. Seeing Riley Hart get that orange banner for 2 African-American LGBTQ+ men was incredible. The fact that their story is worth every single star is just icing. Marcus and Kai’s story was beautiful, spicier than I’m used to from my Queen and absolute perfection.

Marcus’ role on the podcast is ‘The Realist’. He insists that he just keeps things real, honest and isn’t romantically inclined – aside from one hot night per person. His parents, while he’s sure that they love him, aren’t demonstrative and always put work & money ahead of him. His friends know better than to believe Marcus is strictly bossy and brutally honest. Marcus is a caretaker, always making sure that his best friends are cared for, loved and can count on him. He doesn’t see himself that way, but we rarely see ourselves the way that others do.

Kai is a popular, social bartender at Declan’s bar. He flirts with anyone and everyone – Marcus especially. Would he love to jump that man’s bones? 100%. Does he expect to ever get the opportunity? 50% - but Kai is nothing if not persistent. When his roommate lets Kai know that he’s moving out, Kai begins to panic. He can’t afford the rent in his apartment alone. Marcus comes to his rescue, offering him a place to stay in his home. Why? Marcus isn’t sure either, but he can’t let Kai flounder.

Speaking of flounder, Kai has a beautiful aquarium and his fish are his babies. Marcus, being realistic and definitely not caring, reads up on everything to do with Kai’s fish, the tank and their care. Totally realistic and not at all romantic. The same as when he and Kai begin spending some time together – horizontally. They aren’t dating, nope. Just only spending that specific time with one another and even getting some of that time in vertically in Dec’s office.

After an offer to move away to work falls into his lap, Kai jumps at it. He’s insistent that he needs to do this so that he’s ‘worthy’ of Marcus. Marcus doesn’t want Kai to go, but he won’t ask him to stay, either. He will, however, ponder leaving with him – again, a totally realistic and not ‘loving relationship’ behaviour.

Will Kai really leave? Will Marcus go with him? Will either man admit to being in love with the other and realize that they’re quite literally perfect for one another?

I received a complimentary copy of this book and, as always, my review is honest and unpaid. The paperback purchase was made because I wanted it.

Rating: 4.5 stars

The way Marcus is with Kai's fish - that alone had me positively swooning. It also breaks my heart how he takes care of everyone else he loves but won't let them take care of him. I love that Kai comes from a place where materially he doesn't have a lot, but he takes care of Marcus in really important ways (that Kai doesn't necessarily realize are that important). The chemistry between them is sizzling - Kai is such a flirt, but he actually wants Marcus. And Marcus wants Kai but there's an age gap and the issue of Kai being the employee of one of Marcus' best friends...

I LOVE the dynamic between these two! Kai is so flirty and open and fun, but when it comes down to it he's actually very alone with nobody to count on. Marcus is so pragmatic and kind of closed off, but the friendships he does have run very deep and he actually has a very rich and plentiful support network. The dichotomy between their public personas and who they are deep down and the way those reflect off each other is so clever, and such a joy to read them making those connections and filling in the gaps in each other's lives.

This is the third book in the Vers Podcast series, and while it can be read as a standalone, these guys are so intertwined you're probably going to want to read the series in order.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are unbiased and my own.
