I did not personally enjoy this one as quite much as I enjoyed Skin of the Sea, though it definitely did a good job of wrapping up Simi’s story in a satisfying way.
A solid sequel to Skin of the Sea. I appreciated the character development in Simi, the depth of the lore of West African mythology as the anti-gods were introduced, the semi-redemption of Esu and Olokun. I would've enjoyed being able to get to know all the other Mami Wata, but I did like that Folasade was included in this book. Like in Skin of the Sea I did almost immediately guess the "big twist", but that still didn't detract from the enjoyment of this book. My only bigger complaint is that it felt like the ending was wrapped up almost too neatly? Maybe that's just me being salty (lol) that it seems like there won't be another one after this.
It was a great end to the first book. Loved the way the author answered questions from the first book in the sequel.

More straightforward storyline this time around with the usual character twists from the author. I will say the storyline timing did make a lot of the events in the book unrealistic but otherwise love the happy ending.

This book put our girl Simidele THROUGH IT😭. It somehow manages to be both the loveliest thing I've ever read, and one of the most devastating lol. But yh it was amazing, I love the world, the characters and Natasha's writing so much, and would highly recommend the duology!!

I really love this author and wish that the series could continue beyond this duology. African mythology and mermaids, a powerful female lead, and a quickly digestible YA format; what are you waiting for?
2.5. Again, the little details are what sparkled for this book rather than the plot or characters. The character work was even less apparent this time around and the plot was very YA fantasy boilerplate. Also, I usually vibe hard with books that have their characters work on themselves rather than having the end goal be a relationship but, in this instance, I felt like Kola and Simidele had kept themselves apart for such manufactured reasons (that it was going to end so why begin it? .... You can say that for literally every relationship, yeah?) that for her to go: you can't come, I need to do this by myself felt like..... um, I don't think you're that into him, my dude. I could understand if he wasn't willing to follow her anywhere and let her do her thing exactly the way she wanted to do it but, uh, he was so...?
