I was a bit disappointed with this one, I loved Skin of the Sea but this sequel just wasn't as good.
Middle of the road for me, but I liked the elephant!

Another homerun by Natasha Bowen! Brought a whole new level of West African folklore with plenty of beautiful imagery and unsettling horrors. Simi struggles with the choices she's made and their consequences. When she learns it's all been in vain, she sets out to make things right.
Such a beautifully told story despite it's darker side. I know I will be rereading this duology numerous times, while hoping it turns into a full series. Would LOVE to see it adapted into a movie. Despite the long gap between reading the 1st book, Skin of the Sea, I was able to jump back into the story and become engrossed in Simi's world all over again. Can only imagine how much more I would have loved it if I had read them back to back!

I barely had a second to breath in this story from chapter 1 till the end this second installment was fast paced and hand punch after punch. I had to lower my rating for book one because this one was so much more satisfying and entertaining than book 1 which is hard to do in writing. They both can't be 5 stars because this one blew it out the water. The action the twists and turns had me so upset and so satisfied at the same time.
I did not think after book one I could be surprised but I was and Natasha Bowen tore my heart out in this one. Some of the parts I had to put the book down and breathe because I was getting so upset! I just want Simidele to be happy and be free of all the bs that she has been dealing with. So much of the consequences fall on her to fix.
I would love to see another installment of this series following one of the other Mami Wata. This series will definitely be on my reread list.

I enjoyed returning to this world. Bowen managed to keep the intensity of the first novel while also adding new information to the world, and it worked.
