I did not see that coming!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I thought this was going to be a regular magical mystery, but it turned into a full-blow Studio Ghibli movie in book form and I loved every moment of it. I hope to be reading the sequels in the future because this was such a delightful, dark, and magical read.

Although this was a fast read, I felt like parts in the beginning were a bit too confusing. If they were confusing to me, by their descriptions, how easy would it be for a child to understand, in which this is aimed for. I read this thinking it would be something my 11 year old would enjoy, but after reading it, I know that it wouldn't have been.

This story wasn't bad, I just feel like a lot of it was rushed or that characters weren't really drawing you into them. Stella lives with her three aunts who are a bit protective of her. She comes across something strange and becomes involved in being sought out by a professor trying to find a significant item. She meets some kind characters along the way and some mean ones too.

You know when kids write stories and they suddenly throw in ideas of something but it has no meat to it? That is what this story is like. I am sure the second book explains more, but I won't be reading it.

Such a wonderful adventure, full of colourful characters, (I loved Signor Capellini and his educated cats), folklore, intrigue, scoundrels, friendship and discovery. Can’t wait to see what happens next!

This was a cute book. I loved the Victorian setting and the creepy ritual in the beginning. Although it kept me interested, I felt that the ending and explanation was a little rushed. It seemed open to a sequel due to some aspects of Stella's family/life that are not fully explained. I am not sure it really warrants a sequel though. One of the reasons I picked it up right now is because it is a stand alone. Although I found it fun, it is not one I am sure my students would pick up.

DNF @ p. 53. Cute idea; didn't seem to go anywhere. The pages and illustrations were beautiful, though!
