Review:
“The Wife Upstairs” by Rachel Hawkins is a delicious and modern twist of a re-telling of Jane Eyre with a southern gothic twist and suspense. Hawkins’ writing immediately engaged me, and I could not put the book down to find out: Who killed Blanche? This book was genuinely an emotional rollercoaster, and I did not see the ending happening how it did. I love how the characters were developed and hearing from their points of view what happened during the night that Blanche was murdered. I highly recommend listening to an audiobook since it adds to the experience and eerieness of the book. Overall, if you like the tropes of “Stepford Wives,” “Shady Husbands,” “Dogs,” Gossipy Housewives in expensive leggings,” and “Murder,” this is the book for you. If you enjoyed “Verity” by Colleen Hoover and “The Housemaid” by Fredia McFadden, you would enjoy this book.

Summary:

Jane newly arrives in Birmingham, Alabama, and she is a financially strapped-for-cash dog walker in the wealthy neighborhood of Thornfield Estates. This community is full of gossipy bored homemakers and anything money can buy.

Eddie is a mysterious widower who crosses paths with Jane since she walks his dog, Adele. Jane and Eddie quickly begin dating. Jane soon learns that his wife, Bea, “drowned” in a boating accident with her best friend, Blanche. Jane sees an opportunity, financial security, and protection that she craves.

Jane still lives in the shadow and is haunted by Bea.

Both Eddie and Jane have a past that they are not honest about. Can their pasts come back to haunt them?

this was pretty cliche and predictable. i have already forgotten the characters names and found the plot twist to be obvious.

Great thriller! Filled with suspense. "Jane" is a dog walker in the rich neighborhood. She is standing in the middle of the road when a car hits a tree; Out steps Eddie. Eddie and "Jane" move fast in their relationship and then Eddie asks Jane to marry him. What a thrill ride with all the twist! This book was so much fun to read with the community gossips and "Jane" doing everything she could to fit in. Definitely a reread.

Fun and fast-paced retelling of Jane Eyre. Good beach read or palate cleanser for heavier novels.
