This book was very good for a YA horror. Normally YA horror comes off very cheesy or isn’t scary since the author is to busy focusing on the YA part and not the horror part. This book lucky only mildly falls for that. This book has a lot to like but also some things to hate. Unfortunately I can not dive to deep into this book without spoiling it.

A good portion of this book is very spooky and makes you feel like you have stepped into a monster movie. The monsters are scary and the fear the main character feels is relatable even if she isn’t. Honestly the only thing that really bothered me was the useless romance.

I go on this tangent all the time but I wish authors would just learn to write in their chosen genre and stop adding in useless romances to appeal to more people. It is ridiculous and so very unrealistic! If your sister is missing/ stolen from forest monster you do not have time for a damn romance! I do not care who this romantic interest is they do not matter more than your dang sister! She knew him for a year! So many authors do this and it drives me crazy! For gods sake STOP DOING IT!

Skye is tired of looking after her younger sister Deirdre. Precious Deirdre who can never get her head out of her strange fantasy worlds, who always seems set apart. Skye's tired of playing along and protecting her, so when Deirdre doesn't come inside one evening Skye just leaves her and falls asleep.

And wakes up to discover Deirdre is missing. Now she'll have to go deep into the heart of those almost forgotten games to reclaim her. And it will cost her dearly.

The summary made this book sound amazing, and there's nothing wrong with it exactly. It's just not for me; I couldn't get into it, I thought it dragged, I wasn't really interested in what happened next. I think it'll do very well in the right hands; sadly, those hands are not mine.

Receiving an ARC did not affect my review in any way.

"I've buried terrible things."
Here There Are Monsters is a book about Deirdre and Skye. It's a first person story told from 16 year old Skye's perspective after they move into a new area that is more swamp than suburbia.Skye uses the move as a chance to start over with a new group of friends: Sophie, Kevin, and William. Deirdre is wild at heart and embraces the forest and the forest swallows her somehow. Skye feels like there's something more out there in Deirdre's kingdom. It's always been a game, children's pretend stories, but this time it's something more.
I read Berube's The Dark Beneath the Ice Last Year and I loved it so much. I was psyched to get this one through Net Galley as well. She does not disappoint.
I love the way she tells a story. I lose myself in her details and the dark, creepy vibe. She writes a good creepy, horror. It reminds me of nightmares and horror movies. It's so good!
I also love the way she weaves her themes into her books. This one seems to surround the choice teenagers make between their friends and their families, about choices and what defines a person. Is it the monster you know, the monster you want to know, or are you the monster? It's awesome and subtly powerful.
I'm a huge fan. I will follow Berube into the dark any day.
Huge thanks to Net Galley and Berube' for an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.

The beginning of this was really slow and kind of boring, then the middle picked up and was really interesting and then the ending was kind of bad again. So low lows and a high high with this one when it comes to plot.

I didn't like the main characters or almost any character (William was good!) for tha  matter and something about the writing didn't work for me either.
