Sorry to say, but this story was too long. And while the female lead started out well, she turned into a TSTL that I wanted to slap the shit out of. I mean, when a man has been unconscious for a day or two due to a blow on the head, what is the first thing you should do when he wakes up? Yell at him? When your man tells you to go to your rooms with your INFANT to stay safe and instead you ignore him and go where you could be KILLED, is that the act of a smart person with an INFANT? She acted like an idiot time and time again. By the end I was SO annoyed and sick of that woman. I couldn't wait for it to be over. 2 stars.

Elspeth, or Bethie, Stewart is pregnant and alone in the Ohio frontier just as an Indian war (Pontiac's war) is breaking out. Nicholas Kenleigh comes across her and helps the widow as they both escape through the wilderness back to the safety of Fort Pitt. This is a beautiful story based on historical facts.
Nicholas was captured previous to this book by the Wyandot tribe and is deeply scarred both physically and emotionally by that experience. Bethie doesn't trust anyone but is forced to rely on Nicholas to help her return to safety. There's a lot of depth to both their characters that is gradually revealed in the book.
Pamela Clare writes some of the best historical fiction books, and this one may be my favorite.

I am so sad this is my last historical Pamela Clare book. She is an exceptional writer of description and action scenes. I have learned so much about the French and Indian war from all her books. This story was unique in that it begins with childbirth and includes the baby throughout the story and all the details of how to care for an infant in colonial America wilderness. Always love a hero who is tender with babies and children. Wonderful ending to the short series!

I am a huge fan of Pamela Clare's contemporary romances, but being a purist at heart, I like to go back to the beginning and read all of an author's work. This is often, sadly, not the best of ideas as a lot of authors' earlier works are not up to their current day standards; this tends to be particularly the case in romances written longer than 10 years ago. RIDE THE FIRE, however, is an exception.

What a fulfilling, engaging, heart-wrenching, heart-warming, AMAZING book this was. Thank you, Pamela Clare, for this incredible story.

(And now that I've come here I see that there is an epilogue that was added in 2010! I will absolutely be seeking out the ebook in order to read that!!!)
