decent, entertaining with audiobook.. nothing unique though

3.5

The Island is about a family who travels to Australia and end up on a small island that is not the tourist attraction that they hoped it would be. Instead of kangaroos and koala bears it ends up being an Island full of angry people who want to hunt them down and kill them after they make a big mistake while visiting. There aren’t any cops, no way off of the island without the assistance of the family inhabiting it, and all they have is each other and their desire to survive.

I read this in about a day and a half and I could not put it down. It had my heart pounding the entire time and my anxiety was through the roof. The characters weren’t super likable, but the main character Heather was definitely a badass. She made some decisions that honestly infuriated me, but I don’t think even if she had made better decisions that things would have ended up any better for them.

This book gave me 2001 Maniacs, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and a Perfect Getaway vibes. This felt like watching a horror movie. I was completely unsettled, but also totally engrossed and addicted to it as well. I will definitely be reading more of this authors books.

TW: Gory, themes of s3xual assault, animal death, grief & loss, and more. Those are just some off of the top of my head. It’s a dark read, but it wasn’t as bad as it could have easily been. Thank you to the author for not absolutely traumatizing me.

Thank you to NetGalley, Little Brown and Company, and Adrian McKinty for providing me with this ARC in change for my honest opinion!

This will be available to everyone as of 5/17/22. Thriller lovers, run and go borrow or buy this one!

This tense novel is near impossible to put down and just flies by! Will definitely be keeping an eye out for the author's other novels. In particular I want a copy of The Chain!

Fast paced and action packed from the very start, I was sucked into this story. I love the intricacies of small town / rural worlds, and it really ramped up the horror here. Because this was straight up horror at times, and it was a welcome surprise.

The survival instincts, and revenge tactics were well developed. Watching these characters pushed to their max, and the "war" play out between both sides of the island was really interesting. All the characters (except Tom) were likable, and I enjoyed their POVs. I'd say it was a strong 4-5 stars up until the last few chapters. I just hate super convenient plot points like
Spoiler"Omg your astrology homework you brought on holiday is totally saving the day!".
I also think the storyline surrounding Tom and his ex-wife was somewhat unnecessary, and it didn't serve the plot much for me either.
SpoilerHim letting his ex-wife die, and being a bit of an arsehole, didn't serve any purpose that I can see ? Unless we're meant to relish the fact that he himself is dead.

Overall a solid 3.5 rounded up.
