Marley & Me

John Grogan

4.02 AVERAGE

Grogan did an amazing job on this book, over the course of it I felt like Marley was my own dog. I can't believe it took me this long to read this book, as a die-hard, bleeding heart animal lover. I can't wait for the movie.

I laughed, I cried, sometimes I laughed so hard that I cried. It reminds me of why I can't wait to get a dog again (and makes me question that desire)...at the end of the day it reminds me of why animals touch the heart so much, the unconditional love that they have for their humans is unlike any other love in our lives.

RIP Marley

LOVED!!!!!!! Laughed, cried! Love the movie, came into this expecting not to like this as much. Loved it just as much as the movie, maybe more. Charming, funny, cute, and of course devastating at the end. A must read for dog lovers!

I listened to this audiobook probably at least 25 times through when I was in school. It fit on my MP3 player and I would listen to it as I fell asleep.

Love Marley

Any dog lover will love this book! Especially those who have had a dog just like Marley! Definitely a great read!

audiobook, great narrator, sad and funny, may not appreciate as much if not a dog lover, very easy read, elementary and middle school kids may like it as well

This book was the definition of bittersweet. Even before you're over the first chapter, you fall unconditionally in love with Marley; the small Labrador pup whose paws are too pig for his body.

This book makes you laugh, cry, smile, hope and most of all want a dog like Marley for yourself.

Marley is a bit more hyper than your average Labrador and he isn't that easy to train. But apart from that, he is the most loyal, compassionate dog anyone can ever as for. He has it all: a cheerful way, the most delightful and noisy bark and the biggest heart.

I'm missing him so much, even though it's been a year since I've last read the book. I saw the movie only a few weeks back and it surely brought tears to my eyes.

This book is a must read for animal lovers or book lovers in general. I love how John Grogan described Marley's antics and also some of the more cheesier parts.

Even though you're not much of a dog person, you'll like this book. It has family drama and the problems faced by the average dog owning family and perhaps this book will change your mindset toward dogs.

Dogs aren't just a walking bag of ceaseless energy and saliva, they are a bundle of joy. They are a tiny heart beat right beneath your feet.

I admit, I saw the movie before reading this book.

I really liked the movie. It was a few months after adopting our shelter dog, and me and my boyfriend were struggling with raising our little trouble maker. He was eating our possesions, barking at everyone, and our patience was thin. While watching this movie, and seeing how many problems the Grogan family were dealing with, we smiled and thought how in retrospect, our baby really wasn't so destructive. And at the end, when Marley is old and sick, we had to go to our little dog sleeping in his bed and hug him and love him because it really is all worthwhile.

The story here is slightly different, but the same sentiment. I saw that a few other reviewers thought the Grogans were awful dog owners - but I disagree. Yes, I am against buying a pet, and I'm all for adopting. But I think its AMAZING that they stuck with it, even through so many difficulties. I know that the shelters are full of dogs, of all ages, whose humans have given up on them. And a dog like Marley is a hell of an undertaking. If it was me, and I didn't have a way to leave my dog safely at home while I was at work - I wouldn't be able to keep him. And while their treatment of his acute lightning phobia was largely non-effective, I don't see much alternative. What would I have done different? I would've tried consulting more dog training specialists, but I'm not at all sure I could have made it through that much destructiveness.

And I hope that people that read this book take time to hug and kiss their dogs, to remember that they deserve more patience from us, and that just like Marley almost lost his home, there are hundreds of thousands of shelter dogs looking for a forever home, and most of the time, your life with your pet companion is a lot mellower than Marley's life. I feel like books like this make me laugh and look around to realize, its not so bad, and its worth it.

Sweet story. Easy read.

This was a cute book, especially for animal lovers. Though, if you are looking for a story that moves along and has an intriguing plotline, this isn't the book for you. However, it's a great summer book with cute dog stories and a heartwarming theme.

Fun, easy read, especailly, I think, for people who have ever owned a goofy dog. Not as heartbreakingly sad as everyone said it would be.
