Marley & Me

I was able to read an advance copy of this book and then was desperate to find people to talk to about it. Not only a great book about the intense relationship we have with dogs but also a realistic portrait of a marriage as it evolves.

ARGH!!! What an idiot!!! I could not finish the book as it was tortuous. I am the proud parent of a dog plagued by anxiety and it takes alot of commitment and love to care for such a pet. Grogan and his spouse essentially see their pet as some sort of trophy that they can prance around town and then laugh off the dog's cries for help (and for owners with brains). I immediately felt this book was written with the intent to be made into a movie. Sure enough, our local libraries now have to make room for not just the book, but the DVD.
funny lighthearted medium-paced

This is such a heartwarming book! If you’re an animal lover, particularly dogs you will adore this book. Like probably many people, I have watched the film many times years ago, and this book had been sitting on my bookshelf for the longest. The film is very close to the book, so if you loved the film you will probably love the book more.

I love how the story is more than just memories of a ‘bad dog’ and you watch how the author grew in the years that he had Marley and the family he created during that time. You see how he grows as a father, in his career and the impact owning a dog had on his family in a positive way. There a more wacky moments that his dog was involved in, which had me smiling and towards the end even made me a little emotional.

There are certain practices that he did with his dog that definitely wouldn’t be acceptable now, and there was a contradiction on Marley loving his tranquillisers and then refusing them, which made me mark it slightly down but it definitely didn’t ruin the book or experience for me.

Overall I highly recommend!

This was by far one of the best books I've ever read. Having been an animal owner myself, I could relate to so much. Definite tear jerker, though.

Okay, so we all know what a doggie lover I am, but this was such a great book and will be enjoyed by anyone who has ever had any type of pet and loved it. A quick read that can be enjoyed by all!

We also had to put down our family member of 16 years last year. Romeo was a cat, but nevertheless: he contributed to our lives every single day and left a big hole in our souls.
Marley was apparently not the smartest animal, but he stole the hearts of his family. Animals can be amazingly loyal. Marley and Romeo definitely were.

Wonderful story with a lot of heart. I'm glad I read the book before seeing the movie because I'm sure the movie doesn't even come close to capturing John's voice. I don't see how anything could. John Grogan is an excellent story teller.

Very good book. Anyone who has ever even petted a dog ought to read it.

Boring. The jacket flap made it seem a lot funnier than it was. I would have liked to read more about Marley and a lot less about the author's family and homes. Skipped to the ending and felt bad for Marley, but in all honesty I don't think the author and his wife were that dedicated to properly raising a dog. In fact it was made quite clear that they got Marley to see if they could "keep alive" something more complicated than a plant but not as complicated as a kid. Appalling.

Made me laugh, made me cry, made me hug my dog . . .
