If you have ever had a pet, you have to read this book. I have never had a dog, but I identified with the relationship between the writer and his best buddy.
Fun book about a cute dog and his family. I read it on the plane from NY to SF in one sitting. A perfect easy read for the plane. And I was wiping away the tears as I was getting my baggage down at the end... I wanted to read it before I saw the movie, since the movie will undoubtedly not quite do it justice.
Ugh, I hate books like this. So melodramatic and emotional. I feel emotionally manipulated by books like this.
I laughed and cried. I spent the last chapter sitting on the floor with my dog petting her.
The man is quite a storyteller. And the dog makes mine look like a saint.

This is an easy, effortless read...but for anyone who has ever had a cherished family pet, it is quite moving at the end and his insights into the effect pets have on our lives is thought-provoking and universal in nature. I enjoyed it.
I loved this book more than I thought I would. John Grogan is a great writer.
I gave this book another try and I managed to finish it this time, but I didn't enjoy it much. I am a bit stunned at the owners' lack of discipline with their dog's training and wonder what kind of children they have raised. Are their antics also dealt with a shoulder shrug and exasperation? I suppose that the Marley stories were written with a focus on humour but I only found them negligent. Some stories took me back to my starry-eyed days of childhood with our black labs but it also reinforced the hard work and discipline required to have a family dog. I, for one, would not attend a 40th birthday party where a 100 lb dog will jump up on the guests, swim in the backyard pool and slobber on my friends. Yuck. The title is misleading. It should read "Marley and Me: life and love with the world's worst dog owners".
(review dated Oct 2007) This is yet another book about a couple who gets a pet to see if they are ready to be parents. And then they become parents and begin to neglect their pet. I could barely get through the first 30 pages. I abandoned it then.

i mean, what's not to love about a story of a dog and his master? very very cute, read. any dog lover will love this book. marley reminds me a little too much of my mom's big ol' chocolate lab (i love dogs, but just can't stand hers!), but it's a sweet story and definately a quick read. =)
Such a funny easy read. Makes you laugh out loud at times. Nearly cried at the end
I love, love, LOVED this book. I bawled through the last few chapters but it was a fantastic story of, not just a dog, but of a whole family with their dog.
