I'm just about to begin Chapter 25... and I tell you, I may not be a "dog person" but this is the sweetest story of a haphazard pooch I've ever read. The few dogs I've had in my life (A faithful German Sheppard and her pups that were half Labrador) were a lot like Marley, wild and loving and headstrong (literally). Maybe for that reason this story has touched sensitive chords in my heart, but I find myself laughing aloud and near to tears more than a few times.
At my current point in the book Marley has reached old age and is winding down... It is hard to read and harder to recall the loss of my childhood dogs, but I am thankful for the kind heart of the author who has shared these moments of love and chaos with the reader.
EDIT: And done.... What a book. It must be the sensitive animal lover in me because I cried like a baby when Marley was put down. I tell you, it's gotta be a funny sight to see the usually chipper office gal tyring to hide her sniffles while reading a book in the back office on her lunch break.
Sad, sweet and very true to life.

I love this book a lot but it’s sad at the end like all dog books.
It was probably a cute/fun little summer read, but I put it down and never felt like picking it back up again. I only looked at it because I wanted to try reading a free ebook from my library's website.
Marley and Me is a great read if you’re looking for a book on what not to do with a dog. Unfortunately it seems as though John and Jenny Grogan were some of the most irresponsible pet owners possible. From harsh training methods to a lack of empathy for Marley, they basically treat him like an object meant to entertain rather than an actual living animal. I finished it just to have it off my tbr list and because I enjoyed the movie and hoped that there would be a turn around.
Many people have given this book a bad review based on the view that the author and his wife are bad dog-owners. Okay, I am not a dog person, but even I can see that these people might have made some wrong turns in trying to care for their hyperactive dog. Nonetheless, Grogan's story made me feel many feelings and I think it's a form of art to let strangers feel your pain and joy through your writing. This story is relatively light hearted, relatable and funny, but also heartbreaking. The author is real and honest about his journey with Marley and I give this story four stars regardless of his dog-caring-techniques.
