This is a great book for 5th through 7th grade kids. It would be a good series to recommend to both boys and girls, which is fantastic. The book has a really interesting concept and a very surprising turn of events. I'm definitely intrigued by the next books in the series. (Side note: what's up with dystopian government leaders and roses...?)
Gripping dystopian tale of illegal third children, hidden by parents who can't offer them a future. The juxtaposition of Luke, the "shadow child" son of farmers who barely scrape by, with Jen, the pampered secret daughter of a wealthy government official, highlights how a totalitarian government falls differently on the haves and the have-nots. Disturbing and compelling, especially for a middle grade novel.
Awesome story disguised as a children's book... it's a short read but definitely worth it.
Among the Hidden is a fast, engaging read set in a dystopian world where families are only allowed to have two children. Luke is a third child, forced to live in hiding to avoid being caught by the Population Police.
When Luke meets another hidden child, his world cracks open. Suddenly, he’s questioning the rules he’s lived by his whole life and considering risks he never thought possible. The plot moves quickly, and the concept is thought-provoking, especially for younger readers.
It didn’t totally blow me away, but it’s a solid intro to dystopian fiction with themes of government control, freedom, and identity. A good conversation starter—and a great pick for middle school.
this is the best book out of the shadow children series. i love this author

This is a re-read for me. I haven’t read this series since my English teacher in 7th grade had us read the first book. That was probably 2008?
I’ve been thinking about this series alot lately, especially with the current political climate. Reading this at 28 is a whole new perspective. If I had kids I’d have them read the whole series. Things are a little out dated terminology/technology wise but I think it holds up well.
