Put the words "observant" and "meticulous" together, you become someone sharp. Now add the word "hyper" and "extremely" in front of each word respectively, the sharpness are going to slash you like a knife. The "I" should have learned a lot to be just "observant and meticulous enough" from the stories he went through.

Basically, the message I get from most of the stories has been uttered by Ny. MacMillan in the beginning: "Janganlah mengurusi kepentingan orang lain dan janganlah mempunyai keinginan tahu tentang orang lain."

It has been told, ladies and gentlemen, mind your own business and you could live happily.

But, if we see from a different point of view, we see the character's contradictory behaviours: you are ill-mannered but you are loved, you are lonely but you distance yourself from people, you want a revenge but you serve, you want to see things objectively but you succumb to misjudgment. I guess it is all us. Budi Darma does narrate our life perfectly.

It is a great piece, after all, but somehow it is just not my cup of tea.

I’m very glad to acquaintance with Prof Budi Darma, late I knew that he was a rector and professor in one of my uni at my hometown in Surabaya, Indonesia. While the first book in Bahasa Indonesia launched decades ago, just discovered back two years ago when one of my friends captured the cover of “Orang-orang Bloomington” in Bloomington, Indiana.

Been searching for the original copy in Bahasa Indonesia is quite rare, I got my 2022 English copy from the nearby flagship imported bookstore in Indonesia.
At first, I thought only those several mentioned people would be told, instead, I have found more imaginary personas more than I thought!

After four chapter of life whose been narrated, I quite envy with them: Budi Darma depicted them as subtle and detail that brought me in the situation which “when I’ve been told of being told by someone in that manners?”

For those who wanna learn English through one of the finest Indonesian literature, I profoundly suggest this novel. I don’t promise you could find same joy and excitement as me, yet, People from Bloomington taught me that every reader has their space and pace to find their surroundings everywhere, not only in Bloomington as a place settings but also in your neighborhoods.

Good luck!
