Late in The Third Hotel, the author writes: “During the storm, she had felt like they’d dropped down into another layer; they were no longer in the exterior of the earth but somewhere just below.” That’s kind of how I felt about this book. That this was not the real story of Clare and Richard but what a reader would find if dropped into an inner level of a story, examining things left behind, things that were a bit out of focus in the “real” surface-level story.
The Third Hotel was a fever dream of a novel, a confusing but beautiful book, and one that requires a patient reader. For me, it was too convoluted for my liking, but the writing was strong and kept me to the end.
Rounding up from 2.5 stars.

I can’t remember reading a book filled with as many unique qualities as this one. Everything from the main characters job to the setting to the prose. I’m left here with a million ways to interpret the story yet strangely pleased with my recent read.

I'm not going to add a star rating. I would give it 1 star, but I don't think it deserves such a low rating. This book was not for me, but it was beautifully written. I just didn't "get" it.

Good book for a group discussion — interesting themes on reality, grief, and relationships. The main character, however is weird. So weird in fact that she’s entirely unrelatable. And the weird things about her aren’t just quirks. She’s not the manic pixie in Garden State or a tragically strange Wes Anderson character. Her weirdness almost seems to substitute for depth or an actual personality. In the end, interesting concepts, decent writing, boring/alien main character.
