Just awful. Poorly written, bad characterization, adding POV's from people that are not important or interesting. And it was boring! The story did not move forward for most of the book. And why are people constantly growling or snarling? Aveyard can't adequately show the emotions of characters when they are speaking without using these qualifiers. It's maddening! Both Cal and Mare were vastly more interesting in the first book and now, through the second and third books, they have become annoying jerks. It's like she thinks making a character stubborn, stupid and mean makes them complex. NO. It makes them stubborn, stupid and mean. No matter what the protagonist is doing, we need to still like them to some extent. And Mare has become unlikable. Maven is still intriguing, but but after all that build up in Glass Sword, nothing much is being done with him. The ending of KC was lame. After all the character building events that happened, the choice made by Mare and Cal was OOC, sorry. They did what they did to fit the plot, thassit. So, not sure if I'm reading the 4th book.
First off fuck you AV for that ending... second strategy was amazing... onto the nexttt

This is my favourite in the series.
To me, what could have made it even better was a total plot twist, that Mare choose Maven after inprisonment. They would’ve wrecked a hell of a havoc together, both broken and left alone but together with ability to finally choose for themselves. But that would’ve been a whole another book.

Gets better as it goes on, starting from the point where she gets her lightning back the book moves a lot quicker and it's a lot funner to read, however from before that it was really slow and there was none of the energy that I was looking for.
I bought this book because whenever I start a book series I absolutely have to finish it, unless the first book was really awful. I read the first and second book in this series 2 years ago so maybe the prolonged period of time in between hazed my judgement a bit. Nonetheless, this book was... alright. The ending, of course no spoilers, was kind of disappointing. I struggled to find the climax of the story as the build up was long and same-ish, despite 3 points of views. I don't like being a negative Nancy so here are the things I enjoyed. The romance between Cal and Mare is infectious and I couldn't help smiling, Evangeline's character development was superb and I found myself drawn to her. Also, the aspects of LGBTQ+ were refreshing and pieced together why Evangeline was so cold and seemingly incapable of love towards Cal and Maven.
