I don't know if anyone is paying very close attention, but I read the first three books of this series in 4 days and they are each 400+ page books, so that should tell you how much I am loving this series. The third book is no exception.

For most of this book, Mare is King Maven's prisoner, with her powers constantly out of reach because of silencing stone manacles, a room made of silencing stone, and the constant presence of Silvers with silencing powers. This is also the first book that switches perspective from Mare, and Cameron (and even a few chapters from Evangeline).

Seeing the interactions between Mare and Maven are my favorite parts. Seeing him struggling to discover which parts of him are his mothers doing and which parts are genuinely him. Seeing Mare struggle with her hatred for him, but also the love she felt for him once. I adore Maven as an antagonist because he isn't just evil, he is conflicted and human and warped. And I love Mare as a protagonist because she is not wholly good, she is scared of who she might become with her powers unchecked and who she is without her power and if she does bad things for a good reason is she still a good person. All of Victoria Aveyard's characters are complex and interesting and honestly I'm in love with all of them.

Honestly, it may sound silly, but this books series has been so wonderful for me. I haven't been truly sucked into a world this much in so long. As a 22 year old I often have a hard time finding books and series that I can relate to. Most adult fiction/fantasy seems geared towards people in their 30's/40's, with the main characters having kids or struggling through mid-life crisis-esque problems. In YA fantasy/fiction books the characters often come off as really juvenile to me and I remember felling how they feel, but I don't feel that anymore (if that makes sense). This book is a YA book, and the characters are all younger than I am, but (maybe because of the war) they all seem more mature and I can really relate to their struggles and I become more invested in their lives.

4⭐️

This series turned out to be really really awful. The start with the 1st book was great but then .... I just can't continue reading it.

Re-read in preparation for War Storm (book 4 in the series), but I got bored with it. Aveyard has a way of taking a long time to say things and it got tedious. I'm putting aside the fourth book for awhile until I'm ready for it; I may revisit this one in parts at that point.
