Usually a huge Sophie Kinsella fan but I hated this. The main character was just awful and I constantly felt like I was rolling my eyes at her. Nearly DNF’ed but powered through. It was a chore.
Not my favourite of Sophie Kinsella's books but still thoroughly enjoyable
This was a cute, fun rom-com of a book that I enjoyed reading. I found parts to be laugh out loud funny and generally enjoyed this lighthearted book. While I found certain aspects of the characters and their incompatible lives to be a bit exaggerated at times, it didn't significantly detract from the book for me. My one criticism is that the ending wrapped up SO quickly - there was so much action and I wanted a little more depth to that last part of the story! Otherwise, I think fans of Sophie Kinsella (or anyone looking for something light and breezy to read right now) will definitely enjoy this next release!

I guess I’m a capitalistic meanie but I did not like the main character. She was kind of crazy and a lot of the things that annoyed the mmc also annoyed me. I’m sure there are people that will relate to her being a loud and zany weirdo but it was a bit too far for me. Like you can’t be so oblivious that your dog is terribly misbehaved to the point where you are inconsiderate. I guess I respect the confidence? And he was pretty extreme the other way. And also inconsiderate. And they were both rude to each other.
I finished it, but only because I got through most of it on a plane and just figured I’d get it done with.

This book started and ended strong! I cried at the end! The middle was a little slow at times but I am so glad I stuck with it!!
I have a Christmas tradition of reading a piece of chick-lit in December, and it's always a good decision if it's Kinsella. Yes, the main characters are very familiar but you know what? I really like them. The girl who is getting herself into just too many uncomfortable situations to safely distance yourself from, the guy who is always handsome and unhappily rich and somehow hard to reach, the usual dynamics, and the lovely extras. All very familiar and cosy and making me laugh out loud in the middle of the night yet again, and also making me cry. Neither of which is an easy feat to pull off, ask my other reads. A heart-warmingly constant high quality of this genre, she remains to be my go-to author for this one.

It was quite funny and entertaining to say the least and I flew through the pages in one sitting.
In summary, the book starts off with Ava, a freelancer who seems interested in partaking in more than one thing, with her main concern being this book she's writing. For this reason, and after the encouragement of her friends, she decides to leave on a writers' retreat to Italy. Her goal is to finish her historical romance novel with no distractions whatsoever. But, after the cancellation of the martial arts program, new guests make their appearance into the writing group, including the very charming and good-looking man, Matt, who instantly catches Ava's eye.
The rules are simple, no personal information to be shared, including first names. Hence, everyone has to come up with a new nickname for others to use when referring to them. Ava introduces herself as "Aria" while Matt takes on the name "Dutch." The days pass by in a blur, and instead of working on her novel, "Aria" finds herself more and more entranced by "Dutch." Soon enough, their passionate journey begins, the couple finding themselves enclosed in a romantic bubble, almost like a fairytale.
But what happens when the retreat ends and everyone is forced to snap back to their reality?
“The art of fiction is to present reality as though it’s unreality.” She addresses the whole room. “Be artful. Use disguises.”
As their fictional masks fall, Ava and Matt could not be more different. Their lives, their personalities, their friends, their likes and dislikes, their hobbies... The two are just polar opposites, in more ways than one. Not to mention the reappearance of Matt's ex-girlfriend who just makes things worse. Will Ava and Matt let these differences affect their relationship or will they find a compromise and fight for one another? You'll have to read for yourself and see!!
Overall, it was a fun and quick read. I wouldn't say it's my favorite, hence the 3 star rating, especially with the insta-love factor and a few annoying character traits in both protagonists that made me frown a couple times. But honestly the ending does make up for it, as well as the scenes with their friends and Ava's troublesome yet hilarious dog Harold!!
“You should always be thinking: This is OK…but what else could I be doing?”
In conclusion, I would recommend the book if you want something that would make you laugh and warm your heart! I'm definitely looking forward to reading more from [a:Sophie Kinsella|6160|Sophie Kinsella|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1245821549p2/6160.jpg]!
