Re-read about a year after first read -

I liked this a lot better on my re-read as is usually the case with Sophie Kinsella books I don’t instantly fall in love with (most of them I have instantly loved). I think knowing what was going to happen helped me tolerate all the miscommunication better. Ava bothered me less this time too and so did Harold, lol! Good old Harold. :) I think Topher might be my favorite character in this book. I just love his bastard-ness and his heart of gold! I’m glad I decided to re-read this and that I’ve changed my mind about it. I’ll keep my old review at the bottom though.

I’m a huge Sophie Kinsella fan. I’ve read all her books multiple times and LOVE them. This was probably my least favorite. :( I like how it ended. Once I got 80% in, there was a shift and it got better, but I shouldn’t have to wait until 80% into a book to start enjoying it. Ava was extremely unlikable for the majority of the book. I couldn’t stand her. She’s rude in so many ways and is completely blind to it. Also, please train your dog at least a *little* bit. Matt was fine. Everything was just a bit flat and most of the story was just witnessing the frustrating miscommunication between Ava and Matt. I’m going to chalk it up to editing during lockdown while the world was falling apart. Sophie Kinsella is still a star in my book!!

Predictable chic lit. Tepid story and insipid characters. The only decent character is the dog

I’ve loved other Kinsella books, especially Can You Keep a Secret. However, I just couldn’t get through this one. Both Ava and Matt were incredibly naive and immature to dive into a relationship and say they loved each other when they didn’t. Even. Know. Each. Other’s. Names! Maybe it was supposed to be fun and quirky but instead it just felt juvenile, and I was getting a headache from the amount of eye rolling I was doing, so I gave up.

Sophie Kinsella writes a specific type of quirky character which you may enjoy or being completely annoyed by. My least favorite type of love story is insta-love, which this one definitely including, but in the end I liked it well enough! Ava was wishy-washy and ditzy while Matt was sad and boring and controlled by his family. For most of the book, I wondered what they actually saw in each other, but I think it goes back to the fun they had when they were away from their normal lives. So the question is whether they can work together at all! Their friends were some of the best parts of the book, and there were some pretty funny parts as well. If you can get past quirky characters, you might enjoy this one!
Absolutely love this author, but this was one of my least favorite I’ve read from her. The character plot dragged on in a somewhat self deprecating way that really bugged me. But it got better in the last third of the book. Casual chic-lit/rom com, just not my favorite…
