Going into reading this book you need to know that the plot features relationship(s) and questionable interactions between adults and a 13 year old girl. The book follows a revenge story on the daughters’ behalf by the father who is a doctor. There is medical talk as well as medical malpractice / abuse. The subjects of incest and inappropriate relationships between adults and minors (young teens) are heavily discussed throughout in a very casual and non-explicit way. There is also reckless driving (under the influence) that results in a major accident. The rape in the book is not explicit in any way (not “shown”) , however the book may still be difficult to read as there is victim - blaming of the 13 y/o victim at the very end of the book.
In het begin van dit boek kon ik mijn mening over Marc nog niet goed plaatsen. Wat vond ik nou van deze huisarts en welke meningen hij had? Een deel van mij vond hem afschuwelijk, een ander deel was ook gefascineerd. Dit boek las als een trein, vooral vanaf het moment dat Marc en zijn familie bij het zomerhuis arriveerden. Heerlijk om weg te lezen.

A ratos lo amaba. El personaje parece que era sicópata? y llegaba a dar un poco de risa cómo pensaba mal del resto y cómo trataba a sus pacientes tipo El personaje principal es un doctor que odiaba a todos pero de una forma media apática, era penca pero a la vez gracioso a ratos, no pude evitar reír cuando criticaba al resto y hacía cosas terribles sin que supieran. Es malo el tipo.
La lata es que a ratos se iba por las ramas hablando de, no sé, vacas y la industria lechera (ejemplo X), cosas que no tenian nada que ver con la trama y tampoco eran importantes para entender su rollo mental ni su tema con otros personajes, era una especie de excusa del escritor para hablar sobre temas que a él le importaban (supongo). Pasaba MUCHO, tenía hartos momentos de estar entretenida, muy metida, a querer dejarlo botado.
Hay un tema del personaje que encontré un poco raro (más que nada porque se contradice): no sé si es así como es porque el autor quiso decir algo sobre personajes así o si él como humano cree esas cosas, lo encontré un poco extraño, sobre todo porque al final se contradice un montón con el tema de su hija y y parecía que lo creía de verdad, pero después vuelve a su antiguo ser apático y odiador. Creo que no quiere a su señora, como que no siente nada excepto esa rabia que sintió con el tema de la hija. No sé, es un personaje bien extraño.
Un libro rarísimo. Le puse tres estrellas por poner algo, pero la verdad no tengo idea si es una? dos? cuatro? cero? cinco?

I always forget how much I like Herman Koch until I start reading his books. Like "The Dinner" this book is both familiar and unsettling. Both comfortable and repulsive. Both ordinary and outlandish.
Marc is not necessarily a likable character and certainly not a reliable narrator but his story is compelling.
And just like Koch by the time I finished the book I was wondering just how much of his ordinary life was real.

Koham ir izcilas spējas radīt riebumu gandrīz pret visiem saviem varoņiem - tā bija gan ar Vakariņām, gan ar šo romānu. Tomēr psiholoģijas pazinējs viņš ir lielisks, iespējams, arī riebums no tā, ka visa cilvēka būtība tāda ar cēlumu vai labām īpašībām nepiesegta. Kaila. Meistarīga valoda, aktīvs sižets.
Different than Koch's The Dinner, but just as page-turning. I like that his novels always have a twist - a twisted twist - that you don't see coming. The writing, while graphic at times, kept me reading and interested in the whodunit aspect of the novel.

This was a hard book to read. Started out rather slow, the characters were all rather unlikeable, and some of the imagery was just too detailed and gross. But Herman Koch can tell a story and once it started rolling, the surprises kept on coming. As much as I didn't like most of the characters and was continually horrified by their actions, it all seemed realistic and exactly as it could have happened. A very compelling and engrossing story.
