Lecture agréable. Stendhal a réussi à me rendre tous ses personnages intéressants.

What a slog. Really hated all the characters — I get that this was a critique of society, but everyone was unpleasant to read about, wishy washy, and so much of this book is just people sitting in drawing rooms, talking in circles.

Stendhall's the Red and the Black paints an intricate portrait of the social castes in 19th century France, from the Provençal's, to the petty bourgeois and the financial and social elite which controlled the upper echelons of French society.

Nothing is left out of the characters motivations and interests dictated by their socioeconomic position; he accomplishes this by psychologically investigating through the eyes of the adept and ambitious Julien Sorel, who has a gift for reading books as well as people which allowed him to rise quickly in society.

Without giving more away, this book absolutely entranced me from the first page. I have studied the French revolution in the past, but never with such exact intricacy and found myself reliant on the astute footnotes of the translators which allowed me to read this book with more nuance. After finishing I feel compelled to read up on the Napoleonic Era of French history once more to better understand the text. Even with my precarious understanding of the time period, the depth of the characters and the dramatic Romanticism of the plot were more than enough to hold my interest. I found myself hanging onto every last word. As I progressed throughout the book I was better able to predict the feelings of the characters from their fleeting glances and carefully constructed sentences; this is more of a testament to Stendhal's careful writing than to my understanding of 19th century French social dynamics.

Julien Sorel as a main character reminded me a lot of Light Yagami from Death Note: smart, ambitious, and self-assured. Both of these young men suffered from a strong yet shallow sense of justice and used the tools at their disposal to terrorize and deceive everyone around them.
Ultimately, in both cases their ambitions and naivete led to their inevitable downfall.

To comment more on this specific edition. The inclusion of critical essays, maps and timetables gave me the resources to reassess the text with a more informed historical and scholarly context. Being 23 myself at the time of reading this book I felt a bit of a connection to Julien, I think its easy for young people to believe that they capable of absolutely anything once they achieve their first major successes of adulthood. Unchecked ambition rarely lasts.

From the opening pages--the introduction to the town of Verrière--I fell in love; for personal reasons I cannot disclose in this review, this book is among my favorites. I strongly identify with Julien Sorel, and, like him, find myself imprisoned in the same kind of environment as he. It is as if Stendhal had written this book just for me.

As I crawl through the mud that is this novel, I constantly ask myself "was this worth it?" Frankly, I'm still not sure. I found this to be long winded, calculated and unappealing. I almost dreaded having to listen to this audiobook every morning. I just wanted it to be over. The small patches of brilliant characters and interactions, for me, can't make up for the fact that this was just not my cup of tea. I'm glad to put it behind me and say that I've read. However, it's not something I would recommend to everyone. I'm just going to go and wipe all the mud of this novel from my mud and hope it doesn't spoil other French classics.
