This wasn't the worst thing by fair, but why were there cars and guns? The world felt so lacking and what we did get wasn't really satisfying. The characters weren't really much better on that side either, and in the end I didn't really care enough to want to continue.

To give you an idea of how much I loved this book, I just spent the last 20 minutes researching Courtney L Winn to find out how I can get a copy of this book for my trophy shelf and to find out when the next book comes out.  I subscribed to her mailing list. I’ve never done that. I need to know more. I’m going to reread this right away because it was slow going at first (I picked up a new hobby, it has nothing to do with the book itself) and I need to experience it faster. And again. The rest of this post contains spoilers (according to some people) so read at your own risk.

The highlights:
  • Witty banter
  • Slooooooooooowwwwww burn
  • Bad ass FMC who is also a giant softie at the same time
  • Wonderful MMC who is hella turned on by FMC when she’s trying to kill him.
  • An interesting magic system (that definitely needs fleshed out more, but it’s got me on the hook)
  • Modernity mixed into the fantasy setting
  • Ghosties
  • One chili pepper

I saw a post saying something about what if Casper turned into a man but older and spicier and… Yeah. It’s that. It’s that and more. I cannot recommend this book enough, especially if you can ignore a plethora of unnecessary commas.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Magic, bonds, duels, and a slow burn romance whats there not to love! I found the bonds and shields to be a nice change from the usual type of magic written about and appreciated the clear cut communication between the FMC and MMC. The last few chapters were a whirlwind that left me wanting more. I can’t wait for book 2!

I devoured this book!!!! And am impatiently waiting for the next installment! Hello Ms Cortney.. making a ghostly splash with this amazing debut!!

We have an original plot! Morally greyness from our MMC who I would have welcomed into my bubble from the get go.. no need to convince me sir. I loooved our MFC as well, edgy with a heart who was not afraid to show either when she needed too! I resonate with giving every bit of yourself to the ones around you and then having to figure out who the hell you are after you can no longer live that lie.. and the real work begins.

Whooo come on novella!!! Ready for you!

The reviews I read were GLOWING. And I can’t even make it fifty pages into the book. The worldbuilding was messy and sort of just thrown out there without giving you any time to understand what was happening. But really, the fact that there were cars and guns mentioned in the first couple of chapters was almost enough to make me stop altogether. And so many colloquialisms that take me out of the supposed “fantasy” world. Maybe I’ll try this again one day, but for now, I simply can’t do it.
