3.5/4 ⭐️ | I see a lot of complaints in the reviews but ngl I’m glad I managed to get myself into this book. I loved the magic & god/goddess which I agree should have definitely been spoken about more, but I’m hoping to get more details as the series progresses. I’m very much looking forward to the 2nd book.
❗️ Spoilers ~
Some things I didn’t like/confusion:
• With as much training as Nizzara received and being the “best dueller”, I don’t think it was very well executed. All of her fighting scenes were the same, it becomes very easy to just skip over the duels knowing they’ll be the same…her bleeding out and refusing to use her powers, boo
• Meeting her mother & not having enough time to connect with her before she “had to go” and it was too late to discuss anything at all. Be so fr pls the least she deserved were some answers that weren’t from the book she never even had the chance to read???
• Was Lo disguised as the tutor this entire time and never even stepped in to help other than giving her a riddle to solve even though she already had the answer to it herself?? I was expecting more from Lo’s character and her reveal was weak
• I want to love Shadow Daddy sm but the first time he laid eyes on Nizzara creeped me tf out. I’m sorry but I don’t want a ghostie falling in lust with me while I’m trying to bathe in privacy

She's a fierce heiress to a stolen throne (his throne)...he's now a vengeful half-ghost trying to steal her soul..and I'm utterly obsessed with both of them.
VESSELLESS is an incredible debut & start to The Merciless Realms series by Cortney L. Winn. Cortney's writing style is addictive, and this book kept me entertained from start to finish.
🖤 Dark fantasy romance
🖤 1st person, dual POV
🖤 Warring realms
🖤 Fierce, stabby FMC
🖤 Vengeful, morally MMC
🖤 Unique magic system
🖤 Paranormal romance
🖤 Slow burn with some spice
🖤 Touch her & 💀
🖤 Banter & tension
⚠️ Read TW/CW

I very much enjoyed being transported into this, surprisingly modern (cars, guns, etc.), world. Nizzara is such a complex but relatable FMC. Dagen is tormented and flirtatious (my favorite combo). I ate up all the banter & tension between these two, and I can't wait to see what happens in book 2.
Absolutely recommend reading this debut!

just under four stars, like 3.8. unique story but confused why there’s guns and cars and yet people are fighting with swords??? that ending was crazzzyyy
This is a truly magnificent debut. Breathtaking. Awesome, Glorious. I was hooked immediately by both points of view, instantly curious and feeling compassionate toward the FMC straight out of the gate. Her life and her struggle resonated with me.
Nizzara is an incredible FMC.
Her strength of will, heart, body, and character is established immediately. She comes across as self aware, well-informed as a woman and princess and fighter. She’s trapped in a life she hates with a destiny she doesn’t want and a family that causes her a lot of pain. She has a pure soul, but she feels darkness underneath the surface that she tries really hard to ignore. When she encounters Dae, he’s listens to her, he’s not judgmental, he’s quite protective, massively flirtatious, and doesn’t take advantage of her vulnerability. She trades truths for truths in their discussions, and her love and appreciation are earned by Dae at every step.
The MMC is the ten-years-dead last king of Zarr, Dagen. He is such a powerful presence that it’s easy to forget he’s a half-ghost. He has been tasked by the death god to return to the mortal realm to capture a specific pure soul, which belongs to our FMC. “Dae” is conniving, super-sexy, very dangerous, and he’s got a real soft spot for Nizzara. His talk game is fantastic and he builds trust and falls first and falls hard. He’s definitely a morally grey bad boy, and can and does use people to do things in the mortal plane. He’s determined to get what he wants, but his desire changes the closer he gets to her. Which is a problem, because to disobey the God of death means total obliteration of his soul.
There are enemies within and without in this story. Court politics run deep but in unusual ways. And There are important side characters that provide essential information to the reader about movements, skills, historical events, and unseen danger. There are multiple bad guys, there’s so much family backstory, and the fight scenes are incredible. The aspect of bonded spirits and how they can leave and return with information is such a cool concept and gives the reader inside information in a unique way.
I promise, this book is the urban fantasy you didn’t know you needed, and Daegan is the new shadow daddy on the block. The twists and surprises in this book are top tier, the story is so well woven together! The world building is fantastic and immersive. I can’t wait for this story to continue in book 2!
