Overall, this book gets 3.5 stars, and even though it may not be my favorite of the trilogy, I would still recommend it to the reader. If you watch Chicago Fire on NBC and you love reading firefighter romances, then I would recommend this trilogy. You do not have to read the first book, but you’ll miss out on Jackson and Beck’s story. I can’t wait to read Kal’s story next and find out who will win over his heart.

Story Rating: 3.5 stars
Steaminess Rating: 3.5 stars
Standalone or part of series: Part of trilogy, but I believe each book can be read as standalone.
Do I recommend this book? Yes.
Will I read other books from the author? Yes.
Tropes/Elements: Friends-to-Lovers; Firefighter Romance

I enjoyed this title. It's the 2nd in the series, but you don't need to have read the first one in order to enjoy this...in fact, I ended up putting the 1st one down somewhere in the middle of it and not picking it back up again. So, if you are just starting the series, or didn't really love the first one, you can still enjoy this one.

Rafe and Carmen are neighbors, and they are attracted to one another...and both think that all they are looking for is a fling. But, what they don't know is that this relationship is going to be more than they are expecting. Their families, friends and coworkers figure it out a lot faster than they do.

I enjoyed a lot about this book. I loved that the characters were allowed to be who they are, and that both of them being Hispanic was a part of who they are, but it didn't feel like it was tossed into the book in order for the author to have "diversity" in her book...rather, it seemed like a story about 2 people.

I also loved that their careers were part of who they were and that it seemed like both of them actually had the jobs. Carmen is a dedicated nurse, and Rafe is a firefighter, and both of them are partly defined by these jobs as well as by the things that have happened to them in their lives.

I enjoyed and recommend this title, both for the characters and the storyline.

Romance pet peeve: completely manufactured conflicts for the sake of plot.

Over the past few years, I've become a fan of all kinds of romance, from the classics (shout out to queen Nora) to the diverse and boundary-breaking novels emerging lately (Casey McQuiston, Jasmine Guillory, Alisha Rai, etc). All that to say I have no problem with conventional romances, and I've enjoyed Jaci Burton's stuff in the past. IGNITE ON CONTACT was just not that great.

The novel had a promising start: two mature adults, with satisfying careers and deep ties to their community, wonder if their neighborly flirtation is worth pursuing. Rafe and Carmen have been neighbors for years, but Rafe just likes to have fun and Carmen is hesitant after a messy divorce. Once they decide to date, they become serious and honestly have no issue balancing their relationship and other commitments. Except for a fairly unrealistic freak-out by Carmen in the last 20 pages, there was very very little conflict these characters had to work through.

Romance as a genre thrives on conflict and tension throughout the plot since the ending is never a mystery. While fun and steamy, IGNITE ON CONTACT felt more like the author really wanted these characters to have their own story but didn't know what to do with them. So much more out there that's better than this!

I loved these two together! Carmen was gun shy after her divorce, and who could blame her. The more I learned about her ex, the more I struggled with how she ever married him (she did explain, don't worry). But, I was rooting for Rafe. Like the other Donovan boys, he had a tough childhood, but with lots of love, he grew up to be a rather wonderful man. He was sweet and thoughtful, and he was constantly putting Carmen's needs first. I did adore him. I love the brothers, and though we did spend some time with them, I wanted more. However, I think Carmen's abuelo made up for it, because I loved him and his relationship with Carmen. There was some drama, which was sort of unnecessary at the end, but I really enjoyed getting to know Carmen and Rafe, and that ending made me smile so big, my face hurt.
