There are very few books that end and make me go, "wait... I gotta do this again while all of this is fresh." So I'll be reading it again immediately. It's soothing and terrifying all at once. I think a lot of people go into the series not knowing it is Weird fiction, which means answers are optional. If you're looking for something concrete and tangible, this aint it. Its a frustrating fever dream about why asking why is foolish.

The conclusion of the series!! (for now it seems)

Okay, so some things that I loved about this book: the repetition, the motifs, the weird, the descriptions, the sea monster, the look into the past, and how depserately I want to reread this entire series. Keep an eye out for easter eggs! And don't expect answers, just have fun.

really drew me in and kept me wanting more every time i picked it up, and the mixture of characters i’d come to love with new pov chapters created a perfect balance. as an ending to a trilogy i think it wrapped up a lot of character’s arcs satisfyingly and i think it sought to add a lot of context without actually ‘explaining’ a lot, which is all i could ever ask for in this cosmic horror scifi where i don’t want to know exactly how or why area x works.

it’s hard to keep my thoughts concise…these books are not perfect but man i loved this trilogy about grief and trauma and transformation and nature and family and aliens :,)

Vandermeer is probably quickly becoming my favorite author, however this book wasn't it for me. There's a quote in this book that I feel perfectly describes the series: "You can know the what of something without understanding the why." I loved that quote when I came across it because it is exactly true of this amazing series. But then this book does its best to explain the why anyway. With all the intrigue and sense of doom and anxiety the first two books gave me, and all the endless questions and theories running through my head, I feel any answer to be given would cheapen the experience and, unfortunately, that what this book attempts to do. Those who love having answers to their biggest mysteries may not mind it, as the wonderful writing and everything Vandermeer puts into his books is still there, but it wasn't for me.
