If this book was a person, they’d be kicked off Love Island. The cases were enjoyable, the language reflects a time that I am glad we are no longer in (right?).

i mostly liked this installment of the poirot series. i will say i found the shorter stories fun but i definitely prefer the full, fleshed out investigations. there was CRAZYYYY racism against asian people throughout (which i KNOW was of the times but that doesn’t make it any better to read) and also the word “ejaculated” was used too many times for my liking. again i was surprised at how silly goofy poirot was! i also didn’t realize that captain hastings was used as a vehicle for poirot this much in the earlier books. i wonder where exactly agatha christie drops that. i assume it became quite limiting.

A collection of short mysteries, which I can’t say I enjoy the same as her full-length masterpieces. And yet, there’s a thrill to be found in Queen Agatha just emptying her Twitter drafts, dumping 14 mystery/solution combos more complex and inventive than 99% of modern thrillers into tiny one-off stories. It’s as if she’s telling other mystery writers how little she needs these plots others would kill for; if she had to, she could dream up another hundred like it’s nothing - and they’d all be better than anyone else’s best shot.
