This seems like more of a part one to a book rather than a book unto itself.

Ursula K. Le Guin never lets me down. It's quite a heavy subject matter, though, I'm not sure the synopsis is quite correct.

Gifts was an interesting tale that reminded me of something along the lines of Canterberry Tales of Ulysses. The idea of each "clan" having a gift was a unique and interesting idea, but I would have liked to see more of a relationship between father and son. They were leading up to a big confrontation and then just glossed over it.

Trust in yourself and your abilities.

Loved this book. I found it a little difficult to get into initially, as there's a lot of information/names right up top. I would have found a map helpful--I got the domains confused often and I could have used a visual. That's a me problem, though.

The story was told masterfully, without too much excess detail. It was so refreshing to read a YA novel that wasn't bloated. It had a fairytale-like quality, yet the characters were so believable. Great emotional beats.

It's not a book I would recommend to everyone--like I said, the beginning was a bit confusing, and honestly a bit dull. You'll need to have patience if you aren't a dedicated fantasy reader. I'm grateful I pushed through that initial difficulty. What a gift this story was :)
