The time jumping in this book is really well done. The short chapters make you want to keep reading to find out what happens next.

Fantastic book — every moment of it was thrilling and exciting. I loved the moments of building up the characters through the flashbacks, and the structure of interspersing flashbacks throughout the main plot line was incredibly well done. Superheroes are one of my favorite genres of fiction, due to the stories that can be told with them when done well, and this book was an example of them being done well. The structure of how super humans gain their abilities in this world, and how it ties in with their powers was fascinating, the plot was tightly written and gripping throughout, and the character work in this was amazing. Definitely need to check out more of V.E. Schwab’s works.

This book took a little while to get me going, but on the last page, I was really excited to read the sequel. While not as good as the Darker Shade of Magic series, this was a fun read with very interesting characters.
