Some of the golden glitter starting coming off the cover and landing on my fingers, the plastic wrap came off too. To an outsider it would seem like this is my favorite book of all time. Yet, that isn't the case.
I spent 6 months trying my utmost best to finish this book, carrying it with me all the time in my backpack reading a page or two on the bus or something. God knows what a reading slump it put me through.
I struggled to understand the point of it, found it hard to keep up with the different flashbacks and timelines, on times I would read paragraph after paragraph without connecting any dot to another. Three stars not because it is a decent book, but because it became a familiar object on my nightstand, the Dunbar boys started feeling like a family, and I'm gonna miss them for the sake of the time and months I spent with them.

I wanted to love this like I love The Book Thief but it is completely different.

I found the writing quite confusing at times, almost like it had been written in a complex way on purpose. Maybe I've missed the point and it was?

I didn't feel myself attached to any of the characters at all; I didn't feel drawn to pick it back up and keep reading; I didn't enjoy the almost poetic style.

Saying that, I did like the underlying story and the hardships that are discussed through the book. Having lost my mum as a teenager, I felt I could really relate to some aspects which is why I've given it 3 stars.

If you've come to this book after The Book Thief, think of it as if someone else has written it or I think you'd be disappointed.

*sigh* Okay, this is hard for me to review dude. The fact that the same man who wrote the glorious book titled The Book Thief wrote this? Like… this book was awful. It was overly confusing and just way too long. There were parts that I enjoyed but the majority of it was too much and just hard to understand.

Too poetic for me. I think I loved the family eventually and their story but I felt like it was too much of a struggle for me to even understand what was happening. I’m guessing if I read this book in a literature class and broke it down, I would have grown to love it much more.

It’s just so slow, and none of it made sense to me, I mean the whole thing just seemed a bit boring about a man and his estranged son building a bridge

This is the first ever book I’ve not finished usually I can power through
And I wanted to love it because I loved the book thief so much, it’s one of my all time favourites but I just couldn’t
