The heartache and angst in Golden Fool had me needing to put it down several times and walk away. Not in a bad way, but in a way that underscores the brilliance of all Robin Hobb books: that her characters feel like real people that you know and love, and when they mess up or get hurt or hurt others (cough FITZ cough) you want nothing more than to fold yourself into the pages of the book and make it all better yourself.

This installment might be the most character-heavy one yet, with not a great deal of action taking place but a whole lot of political intrigue and interpersonal/intrapersonal conflicts.

It's so hard to pick favorite characters of Hobb's because they're all so fascinating in their own right, but damn -- I love the Fool. 🥹 Fitz, my brother, get it together.

It feels weird giving anything other than a 4 or above to a Robin Hobb book, but, like Royal Assassin, this one suffered a bit from hang-around-buckkeep-and-brood-itis. Some interesting thematic work being done with desire, and some political intrigue with the Piebalds and Old Blood that in principle should be rad, but in practice feels like all the plot is happening outside Buckkeep, while Fitz squabbles with the Fool and mopes about inside it. Thick is a great character, though. You can see how a lesser writer would turn him into some object lesson about 'Downs Syndrome people are people too!', but in Hobb's hands he becomes a full character, with his own personality and skills (and Skills, heh) and desires and concerns and backstory.

Deeply engrossing writing, as always. Even at the same time as I'm aware of the bits that could be improved, I never want to put the book down once I pick it up.

Bon.

If Fitz would quit being such a queerphobic little BABY man, he'd have a much easier life. You're never too old to be an idiot.

You seek a false comfort when you demand that I define myself for you with words. Words do not contain or define any person. A heart can, if it is willing.

A miracle happened this month as I've read two books from the same series one after the other. I never do that.

And although I was really invested into the story after finishing the first volume, Fool's Errand, this one wasn't that interesting.

Nothing really happens, the author takes her time with every single character, especially Fitz. Good thing she writes so damn well!

Ok, so stuff does start happening after 300 pages so I guess I should be happy with that :)) I do love the author's style and way of describing character's actions, thoughts and feelings.

All in all an ok middle book and cannot wait to pick up the next one.
